A considerable quantity of microplastic debris exists in the environment and toxicity these materials has a notable impact on aquatic ecosystems. In this paper, 50–500 µm polystyrene microplastics (exposure concentrations were 200 µg/L, 800 3200 µg/L concentrations) selected to study effects (PS-MPs) cell morphology, detoxification enzyme activity, mRNA expression liver tissues crucian carp juveniles. The results demonstrated that: (1) Different PS-MPs cause varying degrees pathological oxidative damage tissue cells carp. higher concentration microplastics, lower antioxidant (CAT, GST, SOD) activity greater damage. These demonstrate typical dose–effect relationship. (2) Principal component analysis Spearman’s correlation that four components, namely glutathione S-transferase (GST) its related genes (GSTpi, GSTα), along with catalase (CAT), contributed most observed outcome. components relatively high level responsiveness PS-MP exposure can be employed as ecotoxicological indicators microplastics. There is an ongoing debate regarding the role of microplastics (MPs) in enhancing effects various chemical compounds, highlighting need for more detailed analyses. In this study, neonates water flea (Daphnia magna) were exposed to polystyrene MPs (PS-MPs; 3 µm; exposure concentration, 1.25 mg/L), a mixture seven organic UV-filters (avobenzone, ethylhexyl triazone, homosalate, iscotrizinol, octinoxate, octisalate, and octocrylene; each at low environmental concentration 200 ng/L), or combination both pollutants 3, 7, 21 days. Results showed that PS-MPs alone decreased body size daphnids, while all treatments increased heart rate by end 21-day exposure. On days 21, + reduced swimming speed total distance travelled. Additionally, time first egg production, but number number, maximum neonate during treatment. Similarly, combined production number. All multixenobiotic resistance activity on only elevated CYP450 day 3. GST early no effect 21. CAT was also affected time-dependent manner. These findings demonstrate chronic UV-filters, applied individually moderately impacts development, rate, D. magna, significantly altering reproduction key cellular functions such as membrane transport activity, metabolism, antioxidant defense. Co-exposure did not reveal clear pattern synergism antagonism, suggesting joint toxicity risks these xenobiotics typically emerge concentrations higher than levels. Future studies should explore potential interactions thoroughly assess transgenerational defense pathways.

Emerging pollutants increasingly threaten aquatic ecosystems and human health. However, the risk assessment of these is constrained by insufficient toxicity data for species. In this study, a predictive framework has been established to predict potential across 16 species, including marine freshwater species varying trophic levels simulate their sensitivity distributions (SSDs). Machine learning analysis indicated that per- polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) organophosphate esters (OPEs) exhibited higher in compared The presence aromatic rings chlorine substituents was associated with increased OPEs, alkyl OPEs showed positive correlation side chain length. Key parameters affecting PFAS included length, substituent type, number ether bonds. Additionally, comprehensive ecological framework, integrating persistence, bioaccumulation, toxicity, concentration, developed evaluate 13 PFASs 6 Bohai Sea. Notably, our identified several compounds, such as perfluorododecanoic acid, perfluoro(3,5-dioxahexanoic) tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate, previously considered low or nonrisk, posing significant risks region. Thus, offers robust tool advancing emerging pollutants.
