Despite the emergence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and resistant bacteria (ARBs), how biological inter-trophic interactions, modulated by watershed urbanization, shape resistome remains unexplored. We collected water samples from highly urbanized (western: 65 % built land, sewage-affected) lesser-urbanized (northern: 25 drinking source) downstream tributaries Jiulong River in southeast China over dry wet seasons. utilized metagenomic amplicon (16S 18S rDNA) sequencing to investigate relationships among microeukaryotic algae, consumer protists, bacterial communities, resistome. Metagenomic results showed that ARG-MGE-carrying contigs (mobile ARGs), rather than ARG-carrying (non-mobile exhibited more pronounced discrepancies between tributaries. A higher total abundance ARGs a greater number co-shared pathogen non-pathogen were observed western tributary. Structural equation modeling revealed protist-bacteria algae-bacteria cohesions predominantly influenced northern tributaries, respectively. Additionally, protists had significant associations (511 out 634) with carrying mobile tributary, while algae (73 105) These highlight distinct driving factors urbanization.

ABSTRACT Industrialization has driven lifestyle changes in eastern and western Chinese populations, yet we have a poor understanding of the dynamic their gut microbiome resistome under industrialization, which is essential for scientific management public health. Here, this study employed metagenomics to analyze microbiota 1,382 healthy individuals from China, including 415 region advanced industrialization 967 developing industrialization. Compared with populations show significant increase interindividual dissimilarity microbial species composition metabolic pathways but decrease intraindividual functional diversity. Furthermore, our results found significantly less abundance richness antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) alongside lower prevalence unique core ARG subtypes. For 12 types shared between mean relative two was notably higher while eight had populations. Based on reconstruction metagenomic assembled genomes, that Escherichia coli genomes carried more virulence factor (VFGs) mobile genetic elements (MGEs) compared those This large-scale first time revealed potentially led unexpected alterations provide vital implication health may aid development region-specific strategies managing pathogenic infections. IMPORTANCE As China experiences rapid uneven its effect people’s bacteria critical reveals how reshape risks related resistance. work provides crucial information help create customized policies different regions.
