Microplastics (MP) are ubiquitous contaminants in diverse environmental matrices, including biota. Urban birds, such as pigeons (Columba livia), particularly vulnerable to MP exposure due their scavenging habits and proximity human activities. This study developed applied a methodology assess presence pigeon feces, starting with review of existing methods for extracting MPs from organic matrices. Of all the methodologies investigated, method was established be tested, varying reagent, using feces collected Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Azcapotzalco Unit (UAM-A) 15 virgin microplastics five different types. both reagents, it found that 50% H2O2 presented better results (degradation almost matter recovery efficiency 93.33%). The selected optimized before being three sites Mexico City (n = 10 samples per site). were extracted digestion process hydrogen peroxide, flotation test CaCl2, staining red Nile dye vacuum filtration analyzed by microscopy FTIR. Concentrations ranged 16.4 27.8 MP/g dry fragments (80%) fibers (20%) predominant shapes. most common colors black (32%) white (22%), polymers identified included polystyrene polyethylene size < 1 mm (54%). These findings suggest ingest during feeding, likely confusion matter, highlighting risks urban plastic pollution avian health. ingestion could lead malnutrition, organ damage, ecosystem imbalances, underscoring need improved waste management areas. provides evidence pervasive impact non-marine environments, demonstrating potential birds bio-indicators local contamination.
