Artificial reservoirs are essential in regulating water flow, sediment transport, and carbon storage riverine environments. The Yellow River is characterised by the highest load mainland China gradual implementation of Water Sediment Regulation Scheme (WSRS) since 2002, a reservoir management strategy to release most material accumulated during short period avoid siltation problems. This study assesses evolution organic burial trapping eight from 2002-2011 2012-2018 (after complete WSRS) as result variations precipitation regulation reservoirs, illustrating variation total content, seasonal rates, impacts river ecology. In upper stream, we found decrease Longyangxia 0.67 Mt C 0.30 Laxiwa 0.18 0.14 C; Lijiaxia Liujiaxia carbon, which has been reduced 0.05 0.49 0.12 C, respectively, corresponding an increment regime availability. lower Sanmenxia had reduction 6.16 1.69 Xiaolangdi experienced significant rate, 26.83 3.92 C. Finally, tributary streams, was drastically reduced, 0.21 0.004 Mtc Guxian reservoir, 0.09 0.001 Luhun mainly because strict regulation. These considerable changes reveal high on role important sinks basin.

Abstract The quality and quantity of organic matter (OM) in a river system directly affects ecosystem health; thus, managers benefit from an in‐depth understanding the drivers sources OM. In Snake River, highly altered river‐reservoir semi‐arid western United States, OM production loading are key reservoir anoxia, which leads to several deleterious processes such as mercury methylation. However, quantities effects impoundment on moving through system, not well understood. Particulate carbon (POC), dissolved (DOC), particulate nitrogen (PN), chlorophyll (chl‐ ), δ 15 N–PN 13 C–POC isotopic ratios were measured bi‐weekly for over 2 years at four locations River Hells Canyon Reservoir Complex determine spatial temporal patterns sources. POC concentrations increased riverine zone upstream reservoirs, likely due situ primary and/or inputs tributaries agricultural drains; then decreased most particle settling. Isotopic other source indicators (δ N–PN, C–POC, POC:PN, chl‐ :POC) show that dominant was phytoplankton with seasonal terrestrial/macrophytic inputs. Results highlight major tributary drain inputs, production, composition concentration large may inform water management efforts this similar systems.
