The way that polymer brushes respond to shear flow has important implications in various applications, including antifouling, corrosion protection, and stimuli-responsive materials. However, there is still much learn about the behaviours mechanisms govern these responses. To address this gap knowledge, our study uses situ X-ray reflectivity investigate how poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS) stretch change different environments, such as isopropanol (a poor solvent), water good aqueous solutions containing cations (Cs+, Ba2+, La3+, Y3+). We have designed a custom apparatus exposes PSS both tangential forces from primary upward drag secondary flow. Our experimental findings clearly show significant impact on chains are arranged. At low rates, force causes tilt, leading brush contraction. In contrast, higher rates generate an stretches expands chains. By analysing electron density profiles obtained reflectivity, we gain valuable insights into structurally, especially role of diffuse layer dynamic behaviour. results highlight importance initial chain configuration, which influenced by solvent present, shaping strength salt bridge network also plays crucial determining easily can stretch, with stronger networks offering more resistance stretching. Ultimately, aims enhance understanding physics at interfaces, particular focus practical applications involving brushes.
