A systematic review of Digital Twins in efficient pandemic management with challenges and emerging trends DOI Creative Commons

In recent years, Digital Twins (DTs) implementation has significantly impacted various sectors like industry, healthcare, engineering, and technology. However, the examination of these areas concerning pandemic management is still in its early stages. To bridge this gap, a systematic literature review was conducted here spanning from 2017 to March 2024, with specific focus on COVID-19-related issues 2020 2024. Employing five-step filtering process, nearly 10,000 articles were initially identified based search strings. Subsequently, 297 publications selected examined across pre-pandemic, pandemic, post-pandemic phases discern emerging patterns, limitations, future research directions. Drawing insights, concept for 'Digital-Twin-based Smart Pandemic City' proposed, aiming ensure contemporary amenities while preparing potential pandemics by leveraging advanced cloud storage blockchain technology secure data aggregation. Anticipated challenges that may arise implementing model also explored study.

Digital Twins (DT) encompass virtual models interconnected with a physical system through data links. Although DTs hold significant potential for positive organisational impact, their successful adoption in industrial practice remains limited. Whereas existing research predominantly focuses on technical challenges, more recent studies underscore the importance of addressing and human factors to overcome implementation barriers. One central aspect this context is stakeholder communication, especially given ambiguous nature term DT academic discussions. To expand limited understanding causing challenging communications, article presents findings from an extensive exploratory study. It involves 27 in-depth interviews two focus groups highly experienced professionals. By employing grounded theory Gioia methodology, model communication challenges derived. This reveals complex dynamics within projects, emphasising emergence novel patterns that heavily rely multidisciplinary collaboration. In total, 28 were identified, grouped into eight theoretical themes categorised aggregate dimensions: human- organisation-centric challenges.
