Place-Based Conservation in Coastal and Marine Ecosystems: The Importance of Engagement with Underrepresented Communities

Through the years, research has described importance of community-based approaches in management coastal and marine ecosystems. Coastal issues are multifaceted require place-specific developed partnership with vulnerable communities who impacted by environmental stressors. Analysing perceptions of nature and nature's contributions to people for a Swiss ecological infrastructure

Abstract Understanding how a population perceives nature and nature's contributions to people is key designing society's ecological infrastructure. Narrative‐based research can capture perceive value nature. Using the Intergovernmental Science‐Policy Platform on Biodiversity Ecosystem Services (IPBES) framework, through survey, we narratives assess perceptions of its Swiss residents living inside outside parks. We examined 924 experiences (26% response rate) in from large representative sample study areas' populations. This grants agency participants social experience interpretation, thus reducing interpretation bias researchers. Residents these regions parks, other areas where has been prioritized, provide more benefits than areas; intrinsic as equally important or, for some, even importance economy or culture; that perception state differ As one few exploratory studies examine all types nature, using IPBES international looking at this work contributes strengthening design management parks infrastructure Switzerland beyond.
