Longitudinal association between handgrip strength and depressive symptoms in middle-aged and older Chinese adults: mediating role of functional limitation

relationship
between

strength
(HGS)

baseline
and
subsequent
depressive
symptoms
among
middle-aged
older
Chinese
adults

uncertain.

ABSTRACT
Background
Prior
research
has
consistently
shown
an
association
between
muscle
strength
and
various
metabolic
diseases.
However,
the
relationship
cognitive
impairment
remains
elusive.
Methods
Using
data
from
2011–2014
National
Health
Nutrition
Examination
Survey
(NHANES),
we
investigated
impairment.
We
used
multivariate
logistic
regression,
restricted
cubic
spline
regression
(RCS),
threshold
effects
to
investigate
impact
of

in
subgroups

gender,
race,
education,

Abstract
This
study
investigated
the
association
between
handgrip
strength
(HGS)
asymmetry
and
weakness
with
cognitive
function
depressive
symptoms
among
920
community-dwelling
adults
aged
above
60
years
in
suburban
Shanghai.
Participants
were
selected
using
a
multistage
cluster-stratified
sampling
approach.
Assessments
included
HGS
measured
dynamometer,
Montreal
Cognitive
Assessment
(MoCA)
for
cognition,
Geriatric
Depression
Scale
(GDS)
symptoms.
Restricted
cubic
splines
revealed
positive
dominant
MoCA
scores,
indicating
better
performance,
negative
GDS
suggesting
fewer

varied
by
sex.
Women
alone
(odds

2.00,

confidence
