Purpose Proper performance assessment of residential building renovation is crucial to sustainable urban development. However, a comprehensive review the literature in this research domain lacking. This study aims uncover trend, hotspots, prominent contributors, gaps and directions field. Design/methodology/approach With hybrid approach adopted, relevant was examined three stages. In Stage 1, retrieved from Scopus screened for their relevance topic. 2, bibliographic data shortlisted underwent scientometric analyses by VOSviewer software. Finally, an in-depth qualitative made on key literature. Findings The hotspots were found: energy efficiency, sustainability, thermal comfort life cycle assessment. After review, following future unveiled: (1) assessments retrofits incorporating renewable storage systems; (2) evaluation policy options financial incentives overcome constraints; (3) establishment reliable embodied carbon datasets; (4) indoor environment concerning requirements COVID-19 prevention involvement water quality, acoustic insulation daylighting indicators; (5) holistic decision-making model residents' intentions safety, health, well-being social indicators. Originality/value Pioneered providing first picture studies renovations, contributes offering insights conducive making rational decisions renovations.

Abstract This research is conducted within the framework of Interconnected Nord-Est Innovation Ecosystem (iNEST) project, funded by Next Generation EU and Italian National Recovery Resilience Plan (NRRP).
