The Use of PCMs and PV Solar Panels in Higher Education Buildings towards Energy Savings and Decarbonization: A Case Study

Buildings
are
one
the
largest
energy-consuming
sectors
in
world,
and
it
is
crucial
to
find
solutions
reduce
their
energy
consumption.
One
way
evaluate
these
using
building
simulation
software,
which
provides
a
comprehensive
perspective.
In
this
article,
DesignBuilder
software
(v
6.1),
effect
of
phase-change
materials
(PCMs)
on
external
walls
ceiling
Department
Mechanical
Engineering
Shahid
Beheshti
University
(Tehran,
Iran)
has
been
investigated.
The
methodology
involves
use
layer
PCMs
for
three
locations:
(1)
walls;
(2)
ceiling;
(3)
both
ceiling,
with/without
PV
panels,
leads
seven
scenarios
(alongside
reference
one).
result
shows
that
greater
impact
heating
load
than
cooling
more
effective
ceilings
walls.
For
simultaneous
walls,
loads,
comparison
with
initial
condition
building,
reduced
by
24%,
12%,
respectively.
When
solar
increases
12.6%,
decreases
8.6%,
whereas
total
consumption
fairly
constant
when
panels
PCMs.
last
conditions,
primary
evaluated
values
shifted
significantly.
Notably,
CO2
emissions
saw
nearly
50%
reduction,
making
best
performance
option.
