Designing novel functional compounds is a key step in coordination and organic materials chemistry. Herein, 9-phenanthrenylvinyl-4′-pyridine (9-PheVP), as new ligand, has been synthesized structurally characterized for the first time, along with its N-methylated analogue (9-MPheVP). Both have explored their photophysical redox properties applicability bioimaging. The effect of quaternization on crystal structure, absorption, emission, investigated. Bathochromic hypochromic shifts were observed absorption emission upon quaternization. neutral cationic showed large Stokes 9250 8000 cm–1, respectively. 9-MPheVP was to photoisomerize solid state cis-configuration (9-MPheVP-cis) exposure light. Crystal structure determination 9-MPheVP-cis revealed that Z′ = 2, it represents rare class crystals which > 1. utility an efficient ligand also established by characterizing silver(I) complex, [Ag(9-PheVP)2]BF4. Our results show 9-PheVP can serve promising chemistry offers platform developing multifunctional materials.
