Abstract Suicide is one of the leading causes death among individuals aged 10–24. Research using intensive longitudinal methods to identify near-term predictors suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs) has grown dramatically. Interpersonal factors may be particularly critical for suicide risk young people, given heightened salience interpersonal experiences during adolescence adulthood. We conducted a narrative review on studies investigating how contribute STBs adolescents adults. Thirty-two met inclusion criteria focused theoretical cross-theoretical factors. Negative states (e.g., perceived burdensomeness), hopelessness, social support were consistently associated with proximal within-person changes in concurrent, but not prospective, thoughts. Further, work examining these processes extend behavior diverse samples remains scarce. Implications contemporary theories people are discussed.

Importance Suicide rates among adolescents continue to rise, but there are a lack of clinical tools predict when youths may be at risk for suicidal behaviors. Objective To identify whether geolocation metrics, assessed through an app installed on adolescents’ personal smartphones, could detect the next-week events and clinically meaningful ideation. Design, Setting, Participants This case series study included high-risk aged 13 18 years reporting current affective and/or substance use disorder, oversampled thoughts behaviors (STB). were recruited from greater New York City Pittsburgh communities psychiatric outpatient programs, emergency departments, medical center research registries, social media. Effortless Assessment Research System (EARS) software application onto their which obtained passive sensor data, including metrics (via global positioning system [GPS]), as well weekly experience sampling data probing STB duration 6-month study. Adolescents also completed assessments baseline during 1-, 3-, follow-up assessments. Statistical analysis was performed March 2023 November 2024. About half of all adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD) have frequent suicidal thoughts and those ideations, about one-third attempt suicide. Identifying clinical characteristics associated ideation attempts is important for suicide prevention care. Participants were four groups diagnosed MDD (n = 246, 180 females): (a) non-suicidal youths 76), (b) ideators 102; current ideation), (c) ideator-attempters 56; lifetime history attempt), (d) attempters 12; no but attempt). Adolescents underwent interviews completed questionnaires assessing sociodemographic variables. Multivariate analyses variance, logistic regression models, mediation moderation run to assess which variables group membership. Suicidal ideators, irrespective whether they had attempted previously, higher depression severity, anxiety lower resilience compared non-ideators. Hopelessness was greater odds being a ideator (p < .001, OR 1.18) or an ideator-attempter 0.036, 1.13) than youth. Attempter-ideators engaged more often in self-harm behavior 0.046, 1.45). Ideator-attempters experienced childhood maltreatment, hopelessness mediating the relationship between maltreatment ideation. Self-harm moderated probability having made attempt. Only cross-sectional data included, based mostly on self-report measures. are increases while linked behavior. Background Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) is pivotal in longitudinal health research youth, but potential bias associated with nonparticipation, omitted reports, or dropout threatens its clinical validity. Previous meta-analytic evidence inconsistent regarding specific determinants of missing data. Objective This meta-analysis aimed to update and expand upon previous by examining key participation metrics—acceptance, compliance, retention—in youth EMA studies. In addition, it sought identify moderators among sample design characteristics, the goal better understanding mitigating impact Methods We used a bibliographic database search studies involving children adolescents published from 2001 November 2023. Eligible mobile-delivered protocols samples an average age up 18 years. conducted separate meta-analyses for acceptance, retention rates, performed meta-regressions address characteristics. Furthermore, we extracted pooled sample-level effect sizes related correlates response compliance. Risk publication was assessed using funnel plots, regression tests, sensitivity analyses targeting inflated compliance rates. Results identified 285 samples, including 17,441 participants aged 5 17.96 years (mean 14.22, SD 2.24 years; mean percentage female 55.7%). Pooled estimates were 67.27% (k=88, 95% CI 62.39-71.96) 71.97% (k=216, 69.83-74.11) 96.57% (k=169, 95.42-97.56) retention. Despite overall poor moderation metrics, acceptance rates decreased as number items increased (log-transformed b=−0.115, SE 0.036; −0.185 −0.045; P=.001; R2=19.98), declined 0.8% per year (SE 0.25, −1.3 −0.3; P=.002; R2=4.17), dropped increasing study duration b=−0.061, 0.015; −0.091 0.032; P<.001; R2=10.06). The benefits monetary incentives on diminished proportion (b=−0.002, 0.001; −0.003 −0.001; P=.003; R2=9.47). Within-sample showed small significant indicating higher girls compared boys (k=25; g=0.18; 0.06-0.31; P=.003), no age-related effects found (k=14; z score=0.05; −0.01 0.16). Conclusions 5-fold increase included initial review, variability data that one can expect based characteristics remains substantial. inconsistency identifying robust highlights need greater attention results. Abstract Background Recent research highlights the dynamics of suicide risk, resulting in a shift toward real-time methodologies, such as ecological momentary assessment (EMA), to improve risk identification. However, EMA’s reliance on active self-reporting introduces challenges, including participant burden and reduced response rates during crises. This study explores potential Screenomics—a passive digital phenotyping method that captures intensive, smartphone screenshots—to detect through text-based analysis. Method Seventy-nine participants with past-month suicidal ideation or behavior completed daily EMA prompts provided data over 28 days, approximately 7.5 million screenshots. Text from screenshots was analyzed using validated dictionary encompassing suicide-related general language. Results indicated significant associations between planning specific language patterns. Detection words related thoughts risk-related strongly correlated self-reported distinct between- within-person effects highlighting dynamic nature factors. Conclusions demonstrates feasibility leveraging text for detection, offering scalable, low-burden alternative traditional methods. Findings suggest dynamic, individualized monitoring via collection could enhance prevention efforts by enabling timely, tailored interventions. Future should refine models explore diverse populations extend generalizability this innovative approach.
