Purpose This paper delves into the discourse surrounding central bank digital currencies (CBDC) from perspective of citizens’ views expressed on Twitter, potential implementation a euro. The sheds light sentiments regarding CBDCs in relation to euro and area. Design/methodology/approach Using “TextBlob” sentiment analysis, this analyzes 4,462 Tweets containing keywords “cbdc” “euro” posted between September 14, 2018, June 19, 2023. It explores perceptions concerns, as well general conveyed by Tweets, through analysis word-cloud generation. Text “KMeans algorithm” are used identify similar groups Tweets. Statistical Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF) keyword values each cluster provides information about relative distribution words within clusters. In further step, is performed rating it positively, neutrally or negatively relevant dominant themes. Findings reveals evolving nature CBDC-related Twitter over four-year period, demonstrating slight overall trend positive sentiments. includes with pronounced negative sentiment, highlighting need for clear citizen-friendly communication social media channels (such LinkedIn) addition traditional official institutions.
