Spontaneous counter-current imbibition is a crucial recovery mechanism in water-wet fractured reservoirs, especially unconventional formations like tight and shale reservoirs. The geometric characteristics of microscale fractures require further clarification regarding their impact on imbibition. In this paper, the numerical simulation method used to study influence fracture aperture, length, density, relative position between open face process matrix block. For perpendicular surface contact with water, embedded discrete model utilized simulate varying apertures parallel surface, considering capillary discontinuity matrix, effects lengths densities are simulated. results show that when rate can be increased, as aperture decreases, first increases then decreases. On other hand, inhibit process, decreasing length or density increases. This paper proposes an empirical shape factor fractures, which effectively characterize microfractures block imbibition, thus improving dual-medium model.

Exceptionally large, well-exposed sandstone outcrops in New York provide insights into folds, deformation bands, and fractures that could influence permeability, heat exchange, stimulation outcomes of geothermal reservoir targets. Cambrian Potsdam Sandstone with <5% porosity contains decimeter-scale open, angular-limbed monoclines <0.5 km apart associated low-porosity mm-wide cataclastic bands. Crossing abutting relationships among sub-vertical opening-mode show four chronological Sets A–D, striking NNW, NE, NW, ENE, respectively. Fracture lengths heights range from millimeters to tens meters. A C macro-fractures, possibly B D, contain quartz deposits. All sets have abundant cemented microfractures also record set orientations crosscutting relations. Quartz cement deposits—evidence diagenesis—are the key identifying attributes outcrop suitable for extrapolation targets sandstones because they which formed subsurface. Set fluid inclusion homogenization temperatures (120°C–129°C) are compatible fracture at >3 depth. Fractures stiff those ≥0.05 mm (Set C) ≥0.1 A) open potentially conducive flow. D close spacing—0.18 m 0.68 m, respectively—and define a rectangular connectivity network dominated by crossing X Y nodes. aperture distributions follow power law slope −0.8 up 0.15 mm; other lognormal distributions. weakly clustered, while macro-fractures commonly 1D anticlustered (regular or periodic) arrangements shorter length scales (<0.2 m). Sub-horizontal barren may near surface. heights, lengths, spatial good trace but low connectivity. For applications, results predict initial well-test permeabilities owing disconnecting fractures, closely spaced partly yield high surface area exchange. Quantitative like abundance, orientation, arrangement, length, is possible fractured reservoirs if differing thermal histories diagenesis accounted for.

Jointing in bedded siliciclastic sedimentary successions has been mainly analyzed terms of fractured layers thickness-normalized joint spacing and related probability distributions, commonly neglecting the influence primary structures on petrophysical properties, height patterns, spatial arrangements best-fitted distributions. Taking into account depositional controls mechanical fracture stratigraphy is crucial for improving predictive potential geological modelling exploration exploitation underground resources, gas injection storage. Here, we present a high-resolution, structural-stratigraphic study carried out 72 m-thick succession Marnoso-arenacea foredeep turbidites, exposed Northern Apennines Italy. The systematic integration structural sedimentological characterization this basin-plain turbiditic succession, coupled with geomechanical measurements, represents database onto which tested standardly used density parameters i.e. normal, log-normal, gamma exponential, applied to analysis. Our results document that cumulative analysis does not identify variability patterns distributions instead requires considering single facies types. Specifically, sandstones are affected by bounded joints while clay-rich poorly sorted show higher abundance top throughgoing joints, best fitted log-normal We suggest should be studied at scale resolution unravel strong control reservoirs.

SUMMARY The fine-scale fractures within strike-slip faults substantially impact the flowing capacity. However, effective methods for their characterization are still lacking, making it challenging to predict hydrocarbon accumulation patterns. In this study, we conducted microscopic statistics, ultrasonic experiments and theoretical modelling analyse fracture density elastic characteristics fault investigated of stress. Our findings reveal that in core is 3–4 times higher than damage zone, acoustic velocity 13–18 per cent lower under atmospheric pressure. With rising confining pressure, initially decreases rapidly then slowly, while follows same increasing trend. gradually slowing trend indicates majority close range 0–20 MPa. Moreover, stress sensitivity bulk modulus shear modulus. which correlates strongly with variation density. These indicate fault-controlled rock attributed stress-induced deformation, predominantly manifested as volumetric compression deformation. During geological evolution, differences tectonic faulting, fluid filling compaction zone contribute present heterogeneity Finally, our research demonstrates a strong correlation between prediction results underground logging, drilling data. can help distribution response carbonate reservoirs controlled by faults.

Fracture lengths govern permeability and are unknowns in geothermal assessment. Along their lengths, fracture widths vary due to growth by linkage. Under the influence of diagenesis, narrow seal, breaking porosity continuity reducing open length. The largest range thus susceptibility fill occurs where fractures linked segments. Outcrops a target, Cambrian Potsdam quartz arenite, contain opening-mode having spanning five orders magnitude from 0.082 mm 17.9 m. Combined measured at scales can be described power laws, but given image resolution, best fit exponential functions. Owing preferential sealing small fractures, follow functions, values depend on rules for designating as continuous. En échelon segments, offset 10 mm, connected or microfractures (hard linked) not evident outcrop 1 m-elevation LiDAR 30 m-height drone images. A rule that identifies likely segments located yield meaningful flow simulation. Depending halve double average maximum length values. Length applications should adjusted based wellsite-specific diagenesis information.
