Constructed wetlands (CWs) primarily achieve efficient wastewater purification through synergistic interactions among substrates, plants, and microorganisms. Serving as the structural foundation of entire wetland system, substrates not only provide a growth medium for but also serve adhesive carriers microorganisms habitats animal activities. Research on has attracted considerable attention; however, in practical engineering applications, selection often depend personal experience, which may lead to significant gaps effectiveness systems treating different characteristic contaminants. Therefore, it is great significance investigate influence removal contaminants sewage identify substrate materials with good physical chemical properties optimize design operation CWs-based sewage-treatment improve their efficiency. In this review, bibliometric analysis was conducted using Web Science database VOSviewer_1.6.20 software assess progress research CWs. This article provides comprehensive overview types characteristics based recent advancements field. Additionally, discusses methods factors related conventional (COD, nitrogen, phosphorus), heavy metals (HMs), fluorinated compounds, pharmaceuticals, care products (PPCPs), microplastics. A thorough evaluation economic costs various ability remove major from water bodies, providing reference further development technology.

This study focuses on the use of climbing ornamentals and ornamental plants for greywater treatment in vertical flow constructed wetlands. Different design parameters, such as substrate (sand or vermiculite), saturation zone, plant species (Trachelospermum jasminoides, Lonicera japonica, Callistemon laevis) were evaluated optimal removal studied pollutants. Results revealed that, regarding tested substrates, sand with without zone presented significantly higher rates turbidity (94 ± 5 %) Chemical Oxygen Demand: (96 7 than vermiculite (Turbidity: 54 23 %; 73 29 %). Moreover, slightly recorded vegetated systems compared to unvegetated systems. According findings, all examined survived grew wetlands receiving up 204 mm per day. However, L. japonica C. laevis are more well-adapted wetland T. jasminoides. Overall, application buildings seems like a very promising option improve aesthetic appearance consequently increase public acceptance.

Constructed wetlands (CWs) widely applied for wastewater treatment release significant greenhouse gases (GHGs), contributing to global warming. It is essential characterize the comprehensive source-sink effects and affecting factors of GHGs in CWs, offering references guidance designing operating CWs better control GHG emissions. However, current reviews focus on individual emission mechanisms. With aid Web Science Core Collection database, relevant literature carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions after 2010 was collected organized. As highlighted review, can produce transmit these into atmosphere, forming sources sequestration CO2 through plants photosynthesis, sinks GHGs. Their overall performance depends many factors. Hybrid Cyperus papyrus, alternifolius, Iris pseudacorus, adsorption substrates like Fe-C, low temperatures, a C/N ratio five are beneficial mitigation CWs. Future studies should in-depth research mechanisms benefits microorganisms relation This review provided understanding major bridging gap this field, helping researchers clarify context, providing valuable in-sights further scientific investigations.

Constructed wetlands are regarded as a sustainable ecotechnology for eutrophic water remediation with various advantages. However, the limited oxygen, low C/N ratios, and temperatures post challenges to efficient nitrogen removal. In this study, novel biochar/Fe-modified biocarriers were employed in tidal-flow constructed (TF-CWs) enhance autotrophic After 170-cycles operation, CWs-C (with quantitative discharge mixed substrate arrangement) demonstrated most optimal removal performance, effluent concentration of 1.45 ± 0.27 mg/L average efficiency 78.81 3.67% under (8–16.7 °C). The pattern bolstered NH4+ oxidation drainage zone, while anaerobic functional bacteria flooded zone enhanced NO3− reduction. Activity assays revealed relatively higher bacterial activity submerged (3.72 0.20 mg N/gVSS/day). Batch tests synergy nitrification, Feammox, NDFO pathway. High-throughput sequencing unraveled enrichment nitrifying (Nitrospira, 1.28–2.82%) iron-based (Caldilineaceae, Microtrichales, Ellin6067 A4b). This study that TF-CWs proposed an optimized operation strategy, which holds remarkable significance practical applications treatment temperatures.
