Abstract Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are considered a contaminant of emerging concern in the environment. ARGs widely distributed environment (e.g., soil, biosolids, plants, wastewater), companion and food-producing animals, wildlife, insects. Soils important reservoirs constitute major pathway for exchange among microorganisms, including clinically relevant pathogens. Naturally available clays clay minerals show high affinity to antibiotics, which can be exploited develop methods mitigating contamination water. The mechanism retention, degradation, transformation on natural modified surfaces is complex requires further understanding scalable remediation methods. Here, we discuss source, availability, distribution antibiotics wastewater their interactions with seek effective strategies overlooked pandemic antimicrobial (AMR). We shed light future research requirements extend use inexpensive adsorbents nature-based solutions using these materials AMR
