This study systematically compared the harvesting efficiency and flocculation mechanisms of a bioflocculant (chitosan) chemical flocculant (Al2(SO4)3) for Chlorella cells. For first time, divergent underlying floc structure formation between two flocculants were elucidated by analyzing EPS distribution dynamic changes in microalgal surface functional groups. By optimizing critical operational parameters—including dosage, pH, biomass concentration—the optimal dosages chitosan Al2(SO4)3 determined as 0.5 mg/L 90 mg/L, respectively. Under pH 6, both achieved over 99% within 30 min. Notably, at dosage 3 chitosan-formed flocs exhibited denser structures, stronger adhesion, tendency to aggregate into spherical clusters Al2(SO4)3-induced flocs. Beyond identifying ideal conditions flocculation, this work provides novel insights role groups mechanisms, offering theoretical foundations practical guidance efficient harvesting. The findings hold significant implications applications advancing environmentally sustainable technologies.
