Recess contributes meaningfully to physical activity (PA), but recess time has declined. The study's purpose was report PA by age, gender, and playground feature inform potential configurations more conducive during recess. Using the System for Observing Play Leisure Activity in Youth, kindergarten through 5th grade recesses were observed on at least four days schools Little Rock, Arkansas, United States May 2023. Target features ball courts, grass, pavement, play structures, swings. To provide inferential analysis, a comparison of conditional means across features, gender conducted using linear regression with robust standard errors clustered school. 3,356 scans (intercoder correlation = 0.93) collected aggregated school, day, age (grade), target sample size 292 observations. gap widest among 4-5th graders, 79 % (95 CI: 72, 86) males 64 58, 70) females. Among females, highest swings [82 77, 86)] lowest paved areas [56 43, 69)]. males, it both [81 75, courts [83 89)] grassy [64 60, 67)]. Swings, structures associated higher proportion children being engaged PA. Research is needed identify whether improvements facilitate access these increase

Amongst ongoing urban densification, environments are increasingly lacking adequate and well-connected play spaces. While studies into child-friendly cities have focused on low-density areas, this study gathers different insights the perception of high-density children's play. Using Bibliometrix R-Tool, identified significant potential relationships in literature spaces, well-being built environment characteristics. Synthesizing research from various countries, we summarize current around assessing quality This approach can provide guidance to create improved as part more sustainable liveable compact cities.

Abstract Background The schoolyard environment provides key opportunities to promote physical activity and socioemotional development for children. Schoolyards can also serve as a community park resource outside of school hours. We aimed to: (i) implement evaluate reliability the System Observing Outdoor Play Environments in Neighborhood Schools (SOOPEN), (ii) assess use by children during recess members all ages hours, (iii) investigate relationships children´s group characteristics with levels prosocial interactions. Methods In this cross-sectional study, we observed student visitor behavior using SOOPEN at three urban elementary schoolyards Tacoma, Washington, USA, prior renovations intended expand each facility’s neighborhoods poor access. assessed interrater intraclass correlation coefficients described current (at level), activity, behavior. Physical was on five-point scale dichotomized indicate moderate-to-vigorous (MVPA). Social interactions were coded prosocial, antisocial, or neutral. examined associations selected features MVPA modified Poisson regression estimate prevalence ratios (PR) 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results total 981 activity-defined, informal groups schoolyards, achieved good excellent SOOPEN. Community evenings weekends limited (n = 56 groups). During 26, 25–50 min periods 833 groups), 19% engaged MVPA. Schoolyard areas paved surfaces associated more (PR 1.52, CI: 1.04, 2.23) compared field/grass areas; supervised less than not directly an adult 0.59, 0.36, 0.96). Mixed-gender Conclusions Our study SOOPEN, reliable new observation tool, highlights multi-dimensional dynamics social which could be leveraged healthy behaviors

In light of the growing interest in naturalizing schoolgrounds this paper explores governance configurations that enable, produce and sustain their multiple benefits. We scrutinize existing literature analysing norms, actors, processes through which green school grounds are conceptualized, designed, implemented, sustained. find good schoolyard is exhibited by: i) actual use children make naturalized areas, by its repercussion on physical mental well-being, social integration, sense place, socio-environmental awareness; ii) ways outdoor environments intersect with curriculums; iii) availability public support funding lines flexible, anticipatory adaptive features; crucially iv) architects gardeners engage concepts ecology, creative play education acts (re)making. also at times focus program effectiveness (efficiency, goals) infringes upon justice inclusion. The way participative interpreted, eventually inform designs uses one challenges to consider respect. Greening schoolyards requires participation accessible inclusive for adults from a variety socio-cultural, ethnic economic contexts. nutshell, needs go beyond search narrow technical solutions climate adaptation or pedagogical innovation, being process framework suggested here apt range urban interventions
