This paper proposes a flexible methodology for ecosystem assessment oriented to climate-change adaptation and mitigation policies focused on protection. analysis is based developed at the European level which adapted applied in specific Spanish context, providing practical application that can be replicated other contexts after cartographic adaptation. The novelty of proposed method inclusion land use planning as an element consider when justifying reasons It involves three main steps. first step introduces spatial information different ecosystems study area, including identification services (ES) capacity provide them. second regional local scale Mapping Assessment Ecosystems their Services (MAES) project. third concerns evaluation expected impacts due land-use-planning-related development trajectories depict possible negative consequences ES. Such results show how integration ES assessments into tools could motivate protection through evidence risks, loss, or both.

This study assesses the early outcomes of Poblenou Superblock in Barcelona and a nature-based solutions project Valladolid. By critically analysing available data collecting residents' perceptions, analysis depicts to what extent project's interventions enhanced environmental quality well-being. Results highlight role traffic space recovery strategy as driver for larger benefits, allowing creation socially attractive public spaces along with greenery. led more appreciated interventions, possibly boosted by post-pandemic context city branding strategy. A potential downside concerns likely gentrification processes triggered these improvements.

In an increasingly urbanized world, the concepts of ecosystem services and nature-based solutions can help tackle grand challenges. However, ambiguity in their definitions relationship between two complicates comprehensive research efforts as well effective application policy planning urban systems. This paper presents a framework to clarify explicitly relate concepts, enhancing applicability management Within framework, addressing challenges serves starting point for development implementation solutions. Nature-based alter flows that are produced by altering performance or changing how people engage with ecosystem. results both changes target services, non-targeted leading benefits. Using illustrative case studies, we show be applied expected increase intensity cities across world: stormwater heat stress. Moreover, highlight key topics will benefit from more integrated use services. The helps emphasize co-benefits, used make co-benefits multifunctionality explicit decision-making processes.

Abstract Urban systems play a central role in the transition to circular economy, and cities' consumption makes them essential for sustainable development. The city can help urban centers become consumers of waste generators resources necessary their maintenance through optimized prolonged life cycles. In this sense, article aims identify characteristics compare other typologies: city, green smart resilient eco-city, low-carbon with nature-based solutions. It follows qualitative approach narrative review literature articles from Scopus database reports international organizations. This demonstrates that adopts 10R framework principles economy by implementing strategies regenerate, share, optimize, cycle, replace resources. also highlights study methodologies interconnect all typologies. Thus, contributes sustainability dimensions.

China’s urbanization has received as much attention its economic growth in recent years. While rapid promoted modernization and wealth creation, it also brought many problems challenges. So, since 2014, the Chinese government implemented a new policy nationwide. However, few researchers have examined whether policies promote sustainable urbanization. This paper evaluates of 19 urban agglomerations China using elastic coefficient. The results indicate significant increase number cities achieving implementation policy. risen from 46 period 2010–2015 to 71 2015–2021. Considering impact coronavirus on economy, there would been even more entering during latter period. indicates that positive influence agglomerations. status is not static changes with different are time periods. Therefore, important find useful can guide enhance process these cities. In addition, perfect. To address this issue, categorize implement targeted for experiencing both non-sustainable Changes city’s size or rates related status. A larger city does urbanization, and, similarly, faster do exhibit higher level sustainability.

Protecting and enhancing biodiversity in urban areas is critical for meeting international conservation commitments, has a vital role to play the health wellbeing of city residents. Yet, urbanisation can have devastating impacts on biodiversity, with development typically delivering landscapes which habitat remains only as small, fragmented patches, surrounded by an inhospitable matrix. As cities begin plan alongside other land use considerations, planners leverage ecological knowledge planning concepts aid decision making deliver benefits nature people. Here we demonstrate how targeted green infrastructure placement potentially increase delivery landscape level improving connectivity native species. We measure change when parking spaces are converted small across City Melbourne, Australia. test three reallocation scenarios varying levels space conversion spatial prioritisation connectivity. While scenario that maximised number performed best, show greening delivered strongest outcomes per unit area converted. Improvements were two times higher effort was towards locations identified important barriers landscape-level movement. Our research emphasises advantage strategically investment support biodiversity.
