Scholars have sought to integrate sustainable principles, attitudes, and methodologies into urban development, drawing insights from the natural social sciences as well historical contexts. However, current planning (SUP) research has a broad scope, unclear boundaries, an absence of systematic literature reviews. To fill this gap, review presents visual analysis 38,344 publications on SUP indexed in Web Science (WoS) 1964 2023, with aim detailing trajectory research. Utilizing data retrieval scientific metrology techniques, we: (1) Identified distinct phases research: budding (pre-1990s), exploration (1990s), foundation (2000s), maturation (2010–present). (2) Discovered that predominantly focused research, landscape architecture, ecological studies, publishing trends favoring developed, highly urbanized, coastal nations. (3) Employed visualized dual map overlays, co-citation clustering networks, keyword statistical charts construct knowledge framework interdisciplinary progression thematic shifts SUP. Key included ‘community planning’, ‘urban expansion’, ‘ecosystem services’, ‘nature-based solutions’. (4) Described SUP, green innovation is most promising direction for future (5) Defined its scope elements advocated three foundational principles: equity justice, value articulations, practical needs, offering path actualize efforts.

This review explores the relationship between urban energy planning and smart city evolution, addressing three primary questions: How has research on cities evolved in past thirty years? What promises hurdles do initiatives introduce to planning? And why some projects surpass efficiency emission reduction targets while others fall short? Based a bibliometric analysis of 9320 papers published January 1992 May 2023, five dimensions were identified by researchers trying address these (1) use at building scale, (2) design integration, (3) transportation mobility, (4) grid modernization grids, (5) policy regulatory frameworks. A comprehensive 193 discovered that previous prioritized technological advancements first four dimensions. However, there was notable gap adequately inherent challenges. often led endeavors underperforming relative their intended objectives. Overcoming requires better understanding broader issues such as environmental impacts, social justice, resilience, safety security, affordability initiatives.
