In an increasingly urbanized world, urban biodiversity is people's primary contact with nature. However, as cities expand and densify, green blue spaces their are under pressure, risking declines in liveability. This Review discusses the benefits of multiple challenges it faces, identifies opportunities pathways towards developing sustainable, biodiverse for both humans The substantial biological richness that areas can harbour helps to mitigate environmental pressures, address adapt climate change, human health well-being. challenged by competition space, pressures declining engagement residents Understanding underlying mechanisms informs efforts create maintain high-quality blue–green infrastructure. Understanding urban expansion's spatial and temporal evolution is crucial for sustainable development. Previous research primarily focuses on two-dimensional perspectives, overlooking vertical This study investigates three-dimensional expansion in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH), Yangtze River Delta (YRD), Pearl (PRD) from 1998 to 2018 using Local Climate Zone (LCZ) data, standard deviation ellipse, compactness indicators, landscape ecology techniques. Findings reveal that BTH showed minimal variation direction. YRD predominantly expanded northwest. PRD eastward. Scattered patches with declining density characterize areas. Open lowrise buildings dominate the YRD, while transitioned compact open buildings. The increase corresponds rising complexity fragmentation. highrise buildings, though dominant, show a gradual decrease. offers comprehensive insights into dynamics of expansion, aiding developing more habitable efficient cities.

Changes in land cover by rapid urbanization have diminished the cooling effect of urban green spaces (UGS), exacerbating upward trend surface temperature (LST). A thorough and precise understanding spatio-temporal characteristics UGS LST is essential for mitigating localized high temperatures cities. This study identified changes configuration Shanghai from 2003 to 2022. The correlation between was explored using spatial autocorrelation analysis causal inference. results show that (1) high-temperature space had grown 721 km2 3059 2022; (2) suburbs, largest area tended decrease, while number patches increase, indicating a distinct feature suburbanization; (3) more significant correlation, sprawl primarily impacts large UGSs; (4) compared shape UGS, are key factor influencing regional LST. These findings enrich knowledge spatio−temporal relationship its urbanization, offering valuable insights building cooler

The compactness, diversity, and nested structures of the old districts in Chinese cities, terms their three-dimensional (3D) morphology, are particularly distinctive. However, existing multifractal measurement methods insufficient revealing these 3D structures. This paper introduces a approach based on generalized dimension Rényi entropy. In particular, local indicator τq(h) is introduced for analysis mapping units, with Nanjing Old City serving as case study. results indicate following: (1) significant fractal characteristics City, capacity value 2.344, indicating its limited spatial occupancy. (2) fluctuating spectrum ranges from 2.241 to 2.660, which differs previous studies, suggesting that morphology does not exhibit typical characteristics. (3) map matrix reveals fragmented open space system, heterogeneous distribution high-rise buildings, cross-scale variations morphological heterogeneity. method aids urban planners assessing critical issues such fragmentation, crowding, excessive heterogeneity providing coordination scaling through enhancing discussion broader mechanisms influencing

Urban fragmentation is a phenomenon that characterizes inequalities and their physical reproduction in the geographical space of cities. (1) Background: This polysemic concept currently on rise, as cities become increasingly differentiated disconnected internal dynamics. Research this topic has increased recent years, paralleling growing urban complexity influenced by phenomena such 2008 crisis COVID-19 pandemic. (2) Methods: study conducts bibliometric analysis based filtered compilation results extracted from main indexed bibliographic databases social sciences for subsequent computer-assisted processing. The objective to provide systematic overview structure academic production identify its descriptors. includes works published globally media fragmentation, evaluating progress publications area. (3) Results: Findings show globalized production, particularly highlighting Latin America, both case studies contributions leading authors sources with highest concentration publications. In recent years, landscape-scale green infrastructure (LGI) has evolved from academic discussions into a critical approach to achieving sustainable development in national strategies many countries. Since 2014, Japan proactively integrated LGI various policy documents; however, there is still lack of systematic research on its positioning and strategic expectations. This study employs text mining, qualitative comparative analysis, integration analysis establish comprehensive analytical framework for examining 66 screened validated national-level strategy documents related Japan. The results reveal four common core themes, potential innovative directions, seven topics defining the LGI. Additionally, highlights thematic preferences across different departments temporal evolution trends. findings indicate that Japan’s transitioning technical tool an institutionalized management framework. However, this shift remains precarious due influence competing priorities. “core–periphery” departmental coordination structure exacerbates risks fragmentation some extent. Overall, while system begun take shape Japan, further efforts are needed cross-level linkages collaborative governance mechanisms.
