Abstract Social-ecological systems dependent on fisheries must be resilient or adapt to remain viable in the face of change. Here, we identified possible interventions (termed “adaptation options”) from published literature, aimed at supporting social ecological resilience and/or aiding adaptation changes induced by environmental stressors. Our searches centered nations/regions across North America, Europe, and South Pacific, encompassing literature with without a climate change focus, compare how, when, whom are currently potentially implemented. We expected that options within context would have greater focus enhancing due connection assessment methodology. Instead, found resilience, likely indicating management adaptation. This pattern, along more extensive use responsively outside change, an importance bottom-up influences implementing them, suggests general lack centralized planning organization regards stakeholders. Determining how created, chosen, implemented is crucial step external ecosystem-based management, especially if planned stakeholder adaption goal.

The constant conflict between the rapidly developing socioeconomic and ecological environment within Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area necessitates exploration of ecosystem vulnerability patterns driving mechanisms. A comprehensive social–economic–ecological framework is proposed to assess pattern Area, specifically spanning from 1990 2020. Employing geographic detectors weighting methods, study quantifies spatiotemporal variation underlying mechanisms in area. results demonstrate an obvious trend index (ESVI) across with initial decline followed by gradual increase during the1990–2020. substantial majority region (approximately 63.85% total area) experienced a ESVI 2010. Abstract The Northern Humboldt Current System sustains one of the most productive fisheries in world. However, climate change is anticipated to negatively affect fish production this region over next few decades, and detailed analyses for many fishery resources are unavailable. We implemented a trait-based Climate Vulnerability Assessment based on expert elicitation estimate relative vulnerability 28 (benthic, demersal, pelagic) impacts by 2055; ten exposure factors (e.g., temperature, salinity, pH, chlorophyll) 13 sensitivity attributes (biological population-level traits) were used. Nearly 36% species assessed had “high” or “very high” vulnerability. Benthic ranked vulnerable (gastropod bivalve species). pelagic group was second vulnerable; Pacific chub mackerel yellowfin tuna amongst species. demersal relatively lowest This study allowed identification resources, research monitoring priorities, key which driving that Our findings can help managers incorporate into harvest level allocation decisions, assist stakeholders plan adapt changing future.

Adaptation to climate impacts will be necessary for small-scale fisheries and fishers (SSFs) safeguard their food security, livelihoods, cultural heritage. SSFs are often vulnerable environmental due the place-based, multi-scale direct dependencies on local ecosystems, generally fewer resources or abilities relocation, diversification, modification of fishing practices. Strategic adaptation is therefore essential. This study emphasizes timelines, requirements, burdens implementing existing proposed adaptations, e.g., who pays, does work, how long would it take? To categorize possible actions (tools) analysis, we adapt FAO framework propose five areas action: Institutional, Communication, Livelihood, Risk Resilience, Science. Our results highlight two interconnected trends; first, benefits adaptations unevenly distributed, usually against themselves. Second, there a general lack research focusing equity implications current governance structures that de-emphasize fisher’s needs. creates understanding among policy makers about priorities SSFs, what support they need implement them. We applied this case involving octopus in Yucatán, Mexico. Interview reinforce finding strategies thought most important them (e.g. changes policies/regulations improve healthcare, reduce excess capacity, laws) were could not realize without external support; conversely, tools as “easier” by non-fishers changing jobs, gears, going further out sea) seen particularly viable fishers. Due these mismatches, argue go beyond classical focus quantifying vulnerability towards stronger emphasis prioritizing meet goals fisherfolk themselves aligning organizational accordingly. Undertaking climate vulnerability assessments (CVAs) on marine fisheries is instrumental to the identification of regions, species, and stakeholders at risk impacts from change, development effective targeted responses for adaptation. In this global literature review, we addressed three important questions characterize CVAs: (i) what are available approaches develop CVAs in various social-ecological contexts, (ii) different geographic scales regions adequately represented, (iii) how do diverse knowledge systems contribute current understanding vulnerability?
