Eco-labeling can incentivize effective management to sustain productive fisheries, but certification standards occasionally need be updated reflect iterative advancement in marine policy. The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) recently developed a revised standard for fishery certification, and the process provides case studies policy development that are compiled this special issue. Consultation with broad group of international stakeholders identified several aspects MSC required re-evaluation. Standards, expressed as performance indictors scoring criteria, were based on current perceptions best practices management. requires greater evidence performance, more rigorous protection endangered species vulnerable habitats, comprehensive mitigation ghost fishing, explicit harvest strategies, exclusion shark finning, socioeconomic indicators. Although implementation will continue imperfect, results from MSC's review offer methods broader application codify they continually evolve.
