Nanoplastics
(NPs)
and
copper
(Cu)
are
increasingly
released
into
aquatic
environments,
posing
significant
risks
to
organisms,
including
crabs.
As
the
primary
interface
between
organism
surrounding
environment,
gills
particularly
susceptible
impacts
of
NPs
Cu
exposure.
Investigating
toxicity
these
pollutants,
especially
their
combined
effects,
is
crucial
for
assessing
environmental
risks.
This
study
evaluated
(0.4
mg/L),
Cu²
+
(0.1
combination
(NPs
)
on
gill
tissues
Eriocheir
sinensis
,
focusing
tissue
morphology,
metabolism,
immune
functions.
The
results
demonstrated
that
exposure
NPs,
caused
structural
damage
significantly
elevated
antioxidant
parameters
such
as
GSH-Px
activity
GSH
content,
well
ACP
AKP
activity.
Compared
with
single
group,
energy
metabolism-related
genes
(
TAT
TPI
HK
were
down-regulated
in
group.
Pathways
associated
glutathione
metabolism
cytochrome
P450
notably
affected,
suppressed
expression
immune-related
CYP450
GST
UGT
.
In
summary,
we
found
an
enhanced
toxicological
impact
when

During
the
first
year
of
COVID-19
pandemic,
facemasks
became
mandatory,
with
a
great
preference
for
disposable
ones.
However,
benefits
face
masks
health
safety
are
counteracted
by
environmental
burden
related
to
their
improper
disposal.
An
unprecedented
influx
entering
environment
has
been
reported
in
last
two
years
along
implications
natural
environments
terms
biodegradability,
released
contaminants
and
ecotoxicological
effects.
This
critical
review
addresses
several
aspects
current
literature
regarding
(bio)degradation
(eco)toxicity
contaminants,
identifying
uncertainties
research
needs
that
should
be
addressed
future
studies.
While
it
is
indisputable
mask
contamination
contributes
already
alarming
plastic
pollution,
we
still
far
from
determining
its
real
contribution
issue.
The
paucity
studies
on
biodegradation
ecotoxicity
uncontrolled
variables
involved
during
experimental
procedures,
compromising
eventual
comparison
conventional
debris.
Studies
abundance
composition
mask-released
(microplastics/fibres/
chemical
compounds)
under
pre-
post-pandemic
conditions
should,
therefore,
encouraged,
tests
considering
environmentally
relevant
settings.
To
achieve
this,
methodological
strategies
developed
overcome
technical
difficulties
quantify
characterise
smallest
MPs
fibres,
adsorbents,
leachates
increase
relevancy
conditions.
