Heavy metal contamination in marine ecosystems poses a critical environmental challenge, with significant implications for biodiversity, trophic dynamics, and human health. Marine fish are key bioindicators of heavy pollution because their role food webs capacity bioaccumulation transfer. This review synthesizes current knowledge on the pathways mechanisms accumulation fish, focusing factors that influence uptake, retention, tissue distribution. We explore processes governing transfer biomagnification, highlighting species-specific patterns risks posed to apex predators, including humans. Additionally, we assess ecological consequences at population, community, ecosystem levels, emphasizing its effects reproduction, community structure, interactions. By integrating recent findings, this highlights gaps suggests future research directions improve monitoring risk assessment. Given persistence bioavailability metals environments, effective control strategies sustainable fisheries management imperative mitigate long-term public health risks.

Abstract Aquatic sediments act as reservoirs of multiple sources pollutants, and the increasing urbanization coastal marine areas generally contributes to accumulation contaminants, endangering aquatic life biodiversity. In present study, we assessed toxicity sediment sampled at 150 sites around six islands in Society Archipelago, French Polynesia. This evaluation is based on use standardized biological assays, during larval development tropical benthic species systems elutriates. The results have shown a significant correlation responses four studied: oyster Saccostrea cucculata, sea cucumber Holothuria fuscogilva, urchin Tripneustes gratilla, shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris. Larvae fuscogilva gratilla were most sensitive suitable for assessing quality. Data mapping revealed high toxicity, up 100% mortality larvae, selected such Vaitepiha river mouth, Titaaviri, Atimaono Tahiti Islans, well ‘Ōpūnohu Bay, Cook Haapiti Bay Moorea, lake Maeva Huahine. attributable various pollution, including agricultural, urban runoff industrial effluents, harbor leisure activities. study provides contribution by identifying that will provide essential predictive tools adaptive management lagoons showed rates developmental anomalies, requiring increased monitoring.
