Polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) modified membranes can attain selective ion separations in electrodialysis with several potential applications, such as sustainable brine management. To understand the transport across PEM-coated membranes, we coated six different commercial cation-exchange (CEMs) PEM via layer-by-layer technique. Coating one side of membrane a leads to an asymmetric current–voltage response case solutions containing Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions. When coating faces counterion direction (FT), reaches limiting current density which does not occur if applied is reversed. We investigated these phenomena electrochemical techniques. After coating, total resistance increases significantly at or (relative bare resistance). Furthermore, characteristics are highly influenced by base fixed-charge density. Regarding type, same order membrane: K+ < Na+< Mg2+. The higher is, is. co-ion valency (i.e., monovalent Cl– divalent SO42–) had limited insignificant effects on membranes. Therefore, dielectric exclusion for tested concentrations, i.e., 0.25 M SO42–. Lastly, employed model explain observed effect analyze effective properties coating.
