Plant roots communicate with microbes in a sophisticated manner through chemical communication within the rhizosphere, thereby leading to biofilm formation of beneficial and, case plant growth-promoting rhizomicrobes / -bacteria (PGPR), resulting priming defense or induced resistance host. The knowledge plant-plant and plant-microbe interactions have been greatly extended over recent years; however, is far from being well understood. Furthermore, linkage between below- above-ground physiological processes adds complexity. In metabolomics studies, main aim profile annotate all exo- endo-metabolites biological system that drive participate processes. Recent advances this field has enabled researchers analyze hundreds compounds one sample short time period. Here, viewpoint, we review rhizosphere subsequent 'signalomics', emphasize contributions mass spectrometric-based metabolomic approaches can bring study plant-beneficial – events.

Microbial communities have numerous potential applications in biotechnology, agriculture, and medicine. Nevertheless, the limited accuracy with which we can predict interspecies interactions environmental dependencies hinders efforts to rationally engineer beneficial consortia. Empirical screening is a complementary approach wherein synthetic are combinatorially constructed assayed high throughput. However, assembling many combinations of microbes logistically complex difficult achieve on timescale commensurate microbial growth. Here, introduce kChip, droplets-based platform that performs rapid, massively parallel, bottom-up construction communities. We first show kChip enables phenotypic characterization across conditions. Next, screen ∼100,000 multispecies comprising up 19 soil isolates, identified sets promote growth model plant symbiont

Microbial consortia are a promising alternative to monocultures of genetically modified microorganisms for complex biotransformations. We developed versatile consortium-based strategy the direct conversion lignocellulose short-chain fatty acids, which included funneling lignocellulosic carbohydrates lactate as central intermediate in engineered food chains. A spatial niche enabled situ cellulolytic enzyme production by an aerobic fungus next facultative anaerobic lactic acid bacteria and product-forming anaerobes. Clostridium tyrobutyricum, Veillonella criceti, or Megasphaera elsdenii were integrated into platform produce 196 kilograms butyric per metric ton beechwood. The demonstrates benefits mixed cultures, such their modularity ability convert substrates valuable biochemicals.
