Access to drinkable water is becoming more and challenging due worldwide pollution the cost of treatments. Water wastewater treatment by adsorption on solid materials usually cheap effective in removing contaminants, yet classical adsorbents are not sustainable because they derived from fossil fuels, can induce secondary pollution. Therefore, biological sorbents made modern biomass increasingly studied as promising alternatives. Indeed, such biosorbents utilize waste that would otherwise pollute systems, promote circular economy. Here we review biosorbents, magnetic sorbents, other cost-effective with emphasis preparation methods, types, mechanisms, regeneration spent adsorbents. Biosorbents prepared a wide range materials, including wood, bacteria, algae, herbaceous agricultural waste, animal waste. Commonly removed contaminants comprise dyes, heavy metals, radionuclides, pharmaceuticals, personal care products. Preparation methods include coprecipitation, thermal decomposition, microwave irradiation, chemical reduction, micro-emulsion, arc discharge. Adsorbents be classified into activated carbon, biochar, lignocellulosic clays, zeolites, peat, humic soils. We detail isotherms kinetics. Regeneration supercritical fluid desorption. also discuss exhausted adsorbent management disposal. found agro-waste remove up 68–100% while wooden, herbaceous, bacterial, marine-based 55–99% metals. Animal waste-based 1–99% The average removal efficiency modified around 90–95%, but some treatments, cross-linked beads, may negatively affect their efficiency.

Plastic and biomass waste pose a serious environmental risk; thus, herein, we mixed with plastic bottle (PET) to produce char composite materials for producing magnetic better separation when used in water treatment applications. This study also calculated the life cycle impacts of preparation adsorbent material 11 different indicator categories. For 1 functional unit (1 kg pomace leaves as feedstock), abiotic depletion fossil fuels global warming potential were quantified 7.17 MJ 0.63 CO2 equiv production materials. The (MPBC) was then remove crystal violet dye from its aqueous solution under various operational parameters. kinetics isotherm statistical theories showed that sorption CV onto MPBC governed by pseudo-second-order, Langmuir models, respectively. quantitative assessment capacity clarifies produced exhibited an admirable ability 256.41 mg g-1. Meanwhile, recyclability 92.4% demonstrated after 5 adsorption/desorption cycles. Findings this will inspire more sustainable cost-effective sorbents, including those derived combined streams.

Carbon dots (CDs) have gained unprecedented attention as a novel luminescent zero-dimensional carbon nanomaterial owing to their diverse industrial applications. Herein, we reported the sustainable synthesis of fluorescent CDs from papaya peel waste, acting natural originator. As-prepared and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) were fabricated in composites through facile one-step hydrothermal method. Synthesized RGO/CDs (RC) nanocomposites characterized using spectroscopic, diffraction, electron-microscopic techniques. Nanocomposites with variable RGO CD mass ratios tested for photodegradation textile dye methylene blue (MB). The highest photocatalytic activity (degradation efficiency 87% 135 min) was obtained nanocomposite containing 2꞉1 ratio (RC2). sheets acted media electron acceptors, promoting fast transfer separation photoinduced electrons during excitation, thus preventing recombination holes. Based on agar well diffusion assay, exhibited excellent antibacterial than other materials against Bacillus subtilis (Gram-positive) Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Gram-negative) bacterium. largest inhibition zone area (22 mm), i.e., antimicrobial activity, Gram-positive strains. Taken together, synergistic effect enhanced performance synthesized material.

Wastewater treatment using biofilm technology with sustainable carriers contributes towards the circular bioeconomy.
