Silk
proteins,
viz.,
sericin,
fibroin
and
their
modified
forms
etc.,
have
been
thoroughly
researched
as
natural
biopolymers
for
the
development
of
varied
nanomaterials
exhibiting
diverse
biomedical
applications.
The
silk
proteins
are
extracted
from
cocoons
by
degumming
treatment
with
soaps,
followed
dissolution
dialysis
against
water.
These
exhibit
distinct
mechanical
physicochemical
characteristics
including
biocompatibility,
controlled
biodegradability,
self-assembling
traits,
chemical
modifiability,
adaptability,
thus
making
it
an
ideal
drug
delivery
vehicle.
In
this
regard,
protein-derived
systems
reported
efficient
carrier
to
encapsulate
stabilize
wide
variety
pharmacological
molecules,
enzymes,
vaccines,
even
DNA,
allowing
them
remain
active
a
longer
period
time.
Further,
different
carriers
employing
these
multitude
applications
include
hydrogels,
sponges,
fibres,
scaffolds
particulate
systems.

in
