Introduction: By 2050, the international prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is expected to triple, resulting in immense healthcare costs and personal effect. In recent years, researchers have identified age-related hearing loss (ARHL) as one most prevalent causes older adults be associated with predisposition for mild cognitive impairment (MCI) AD. However, relationship between two remains unclear. Several plausible mechanisms explaining this hearing-cognition been suggested, such social isolation, auditory activation, neurobiological factors. This review seeks investigate literature examining ARHL dementia, how a modifiable risk factor plays role severity decline AD MCI population, advocate why further research on topic essential help create cognitively healthier more informed adult population. Methods: A comprehensive fifteen peer-reviewed articles was conducted using predetermined protocol inclusion criteria, keywords databases. The search limited published English language from 2010 – present. Results: No associations were found brain cortical thickness those comparison SCD where an association moderate correlation factors ApoE4 explain ARHL. use active aids did not contribute benefit compared placebo aids, or after secondary activation group. Discussion: shows inconclusive results about mechanism linking pattern findings show consistent studies supporting particular domain behind relationship. Conclusion: Through conducting review, greater understanding awareness provided. Ultimately, important individual lifestyle changes prevent onset ARHL, subsequently dementia order live higher quality they age.

There is robust evidence that sex (biological) and gender (behavioral/social) differences influence hearing loss risk outcomes. These are noted for animals humans-in the occurrence of loss, progression, response to interventions. Nevertheless, many studies have not reported or disaggregated data by gender. This article describes sex-linked biology (specifically hormones) on interventions, including role in modifying association between factors effects quality life functioning. Most prevalence indicate begins earlier more common severe among men than women. Intrinsic biological auditory system may account, part, predominance males. Sex- gender-related noise exposure cardiovascular disease help explain some these loss. Further still, aid use uptake, health also vary Recognizing key determinants health, present review concludes emphasizing importance a well-developed research platform proactively measures assesses sex- hearing, understudied populations. Such focus necessary advance field science benefit all members society.

Age-Related Hearing Loss (ARHL), or presbycusis, affects two-thirds of U.S. adults over 70 and is linked to cognitive decline an increased risk dementia. This study examines associations between white matter integrity hearing function in healthy aging using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). We recruited 126 participants (92 female) aged 20-79 years (Mean=51.34,SD=20.54) from the Aging Brain Cohort Study at University South Carolina (ABC@UofSC). Cognitive performance was assessed Montreal Assessment (MoCA), evaluated through pure-tone thresholds (PTT) words-in-noise (WIN) thresholds. White measured with fractional anisotropy (FA) mean diffusivity (MD), analyses examined relationships these DTI metrics scores region-of-interest regression analysis. Results showed significant lower FA higher MD values poorer performance, particularly anterior superior corona radiata, corpus callosum, longitudinal fasciculus. Additionally, ANOVA comparisons older without impairments revealed differences several regions, indicating specific microstructural changes auditory impairment. contributes understanding neural bases impairments, underscoring potential as a complementary tool gray matter-based studies exploring reliable evidence across adulthood.

Sensory impairment has been related to age-associated cognitive decline. While these associations were investigated primarily in the auditory and visual domain, other senses such as touch have rarely studied. Thus, it remains open whether results are specific for particular sensory domains, or rather point a fundamental role of deficits

Varying degrees of pure-tone hearing loss in older adults are differentially associated with cortical volume (CV) and thickness (CT) within outside the auditory pathway. This study addressed question to what degree supra-threshold performance (i.e., temporal compression frequency selectivity) as well speech noise (SiN) recognition neurostructural correlates a sample 59 healthy mild moderate loss. Using surface-based morphometry on T1-weighted MRI images, CT, CV, surface area (CSA) several regions-of-interest were obtained. The results showed distinct patterns for different tasks terms involved regions morphometric parameters. While averages (PTAs) positively correlated CT right hemisphere superior sulcus gyrus cluster, perception additionally extended significantly CV left clusters including Heschl's sulcus, planum polare temporale. For SiN recognition, we found significant correlations an auditory-related cluster furthermore language-related areas prefrontal cortex. Taken together, our show that abilities differently morphology impairment. Still, common pattern is greater PTAs poorer all related thinning but not changes CSA. These support hypothesis mostly undergoes alterations context decline, while CSA remains stable.

Hearing loss has been reported as the most significant modifiable risk factor for dementia, but it is still unknown whether auditory rehabilitation can practically prevent cognitive decline. We aim to systematically analyze longitudinal effects of via cochlear implants (CIs).In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched relevant literature published from January 1, 2000 April 30, 2022, using electronic databases, selected studies in which CIs were performed mainly on older adults follow-up assessments conducted both domains: speech perception function. A random-effects meta-analysis was each domain timepoint comparison (pre-CI vs. six months post-CI; post-CI 12 pre-CI post-CI), heterogeneity assessed Cochran's Q test.Of 1918 retrieved articles, 20 research papers (648 CI subjects) included. The results demonstrated that rapidly enhanced after CI, whereas function had different speeds improvement subtypes: executive steadily improved significantly up (g = 0.281, p < 0.001; g 0.115, 0.003; 0.260, 0.001 order comparison); verbal memory at maintained until 0.296, 0.002; 0.095, 0.427; 0.401, 0.001); non-verbal showed no considerable progress post-CI, -0.053, 0.723; 0.112, 0.089; 0.214, 0.023).The outcomes demonstrate could have a long-term positive impact abilities. Given adults' abilities are trajectory progressive decline with age, these highlight need increase adoption among population.

This meta-analysis investigated the association between age-related hearing loss and structural neuroanatomy, specifically changes to gray matter volume. Hearing is associated with increased risk of cognitive decline. Hence, understanding effects in older age on brain health essential. We reviewed studies which compared participants (age-related loss: ARHL) adults without clinical (no-ARHL), neuroanatomical outcomes, (GM) volume as measured by magnetic resonance imaging. A total five met inclusion criteria, three were included an analysis whole-brain (ARHL group n = 113; no-ARHL 138), analyses lobe-wise 139; 162). Abstract Hearing is multifaceted and the relative contributions of peripheral central hearing loss are rarely considered together in context dementia. Here, we assessed (as measured with pure-tone audiometry) dichotic listening) 19 patients typical amnestic Alzheimer’s disease (tAD), 10 logopenic variant primary progressive aphasia (lvPPA), 11 nonfluent/agrammatic PPA (nfvPPA), 15 semantic (svPPA), 28 healthy age-matched individuals. Dichotic listening was impaired all patient groups controls. In combined (but not control) cohort, were significantly correlated measures global cognitive functioning speech-based tasks. Pure-tone audiometry elevated any group control group, no significant correlations observed task performance either or cohorts.
