Understanding how excessive fear responses develop and persist is critical. Research using laboratory models of learning offers valuable insights on etiology. In this study, the influence genetic environmental etiology baseline startle response was examined, focusing acquisition generalization processes conditioning paradigm measuring fear-potentiated (FPS) in a sample adolescents young adult twins (15-20 years old). Participants (N = 794) completed training that consisted quasi-randomly presented rings gradually increasing size. The extreme sizes served as conditioned danger cues (CS+) paired with electric shock unconditioned stimulus safety (CS-), intermediary size serving stimuli. As an index learning, FPS measured magnitude eyeblink reflex to sound probe. Twin model estimates indicated both pre-acquisition (startle probe stimuli prior conditioning) after during generalization) exhibited modest moderate heritability (26%-43%), aligning previous studies FPS. We also observed influences were highly correlated startle, indicating minimal innovation This finding implies might be regulated, from perspective, by general opposed specific fear-learning-related factors. discuss resulting implications for measurement biomarkers anxiety disorders.
