Abstract Electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) are two commonly used non-invasive techniques for measuring brain activity in neuroscience brain–computer interfaces (BCI). Objective . In this review, we focus on the use of EEG fMRI neurofeedback (NF) discuss challenges combining modalities to improve understanding achieve more effective clinical outcomes. Advanced technologies have been developed simultaneously record signals provide a better relationship between modalities. However, complexity processes heterogeneous nature present extracting useful information from combined data. Approach We will survey existing EEG–fMRI combinations recent studies that exploit NF, highlighting experimental technical challenges. Main results made classification different combination EEG-fMRI review multimodal analysis methods features. also current state research NF paradigms. Finally, identify some remaining field. Significance By exploring advancing our knowledge function its applications settings. As such, serves as valuable resource researchers, clinicians, engineers working field neural engineering rehabilitation, promising future EEG-fMRI-based NF.

Background Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has been widely used to investigate the brain effect of acupuncture point Stomach 36 (ST36, Zusanli). However, inconsistent results have hindered our understanding neural mechanisms at ST36. Objective To perform a meta-analysis fMRI studies on ST36 assess atlas from available studies. Method Based preregistered protocol in PROSPERO (CRD42019119553), large set databases was searched up August 9, 2021, without language restrictions. Peak coordinates were extracted clusters that showed significant signal differences before and after treatment. A performed using seed-based d mapping with permutation subject images (SDM-PSI), newly improved meta-analytic method. Results total 27 (27 ST36) included. This found could activate left cerebellum, bilateral Rolandic operculum, right supramarginal gyrus, cerebellum. characterizations mainly associated action perception. Conclusion Our provide for ST36, which, besides offering better underlying mechanisms, also provides possibility future precision therapies.

Reward processing is essential for our mental-health and well-being. In the current study, we developed validated a scalable, fMRI-informed EEG model monitoring reward related to activation in ventral-striatum (VS), significant node brain's system. To develop this EEG-based of VS-related activation, collected simultaneous EEG/fMRI data from 17 healthy individuals while listening individually-tailored pleasurable music - highly rewarding stimulus known engage VS. Using these cross-modal data, constructed generic regression predicting concurrently acquired Blood-Oxygen-Level-Dependent (BOLD) signal VS using spectro-temporal features (termed hereby VS-related-Electrical Finger Print; VS-EFP). The performance extracted was examined series tests that were applied on original dataset and, importantly, an external validation different group 14 who underwent same EEG/FMRI procedure. Our results showed VS-EFP model, as measured by EEG, predicted BOLD additional functionally relevant regions greater extent than EFP derived anatomical region. also modulated musical pleasure predictive VS-BOLD during monetary task, further indicating its functional relevance. These findings provide compelling evidence feasibility alone neural VS, paving way future use scalable probing approach self-guided neuromodulation.

Abstract Neurofeedback (NF) has emerged as a promising avenue for demonstrating process-related neuroplasticity, enabling self-regulation of brain function. NF targeting the amygdala drawn attention therapeutic potential in psychiatry, by potentially harnessing emotion-regulation processes. However, not all individuals respond equally to training, possibly due varying abilities. This underscores importance understanding mechanisms behind successful neuromodulation (i.e. capacity). study aimed investigate establishment and neural correlates capacity using data from repeated sessions Amygdala Electrical Finger Print (EFP)-NF post-training fMRI-NF session. Results 97 psychiatric patients healthy participants revealed increased amygdala-EFP over associated with fMRI modulation-capacity improvements alexithymia. Individual differences this were pre-training reactivity initial success. Additionally, down-regulation during co-modulated other regions such posterior-insula parahippocampal gyrus. combined modulation better explained EFP-modulation improvement alexithymia than alone, suggesting relevance broader network gained capacity. These findings support network-based approach highlight need consider individual function optimize interventions.

Neurofeedback is a brain-training technique that continues to develop via ongoing innovations, and has broadening potential impact. Once confined primarily clinical research settings, it increasingly being used in the general population. Such development raises concerns about current regulatory mechanisms their adequacy protecting patterns of economic political decision-making from novel technology. As studies have found neurofeedback change subjects’ preferences mental associations covertly, there possibility will be abused for commercial gains. Current practices (including disclaimer requirements, unfair deceptive trade practice statutes undue influence law) may avenues which regulate influence. They are, however, limited. Regulating face line-drawing problem determining when induces an unacceptable level We suggest experiments clarify how parameters training affect its In addition, we assert reactive nature traditional models regulation inadequate against this other rapidly transforming technologies. An integrated proactive system designed flexibility must adopted protect society era modern technological advancement. Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a disabling and severe psychiatric with high risk of suicide, adulthood one the most probable period for onset. The neural basis underlying young adults MDD remains underexplored. In this study, we have investigated cortical subcortical alterations neuroanatomical structures functional activation in twenty-three patients suicide attempt versus forty-five healthy controls. Significant disruptions regional gray matter volume at left middle frontal extending to superior involved cognitive processing were found correlated anxiety scores patients. Increased thickness right orbital responsible decision making was severity suicide. Further, increased auditory association cortex hallmark hallucinations MDD, which directly associated depression severity. Moreover, decreased spontaneous brain activity inferior also found, reflecting lower inhibition control abnormal structural findings fronto-cortical areas implied dysfunctional emotion regulation MDD. clinical might indicate reliable markers
