Recent studies have identified broadband phenomena in the electric potentials produced by brain. We report finding of power-law scaling these signals using subdural electrocorticographic recordings from surface human cortex. The power spectral density (PSD) potential has form 80 to 500 Hz. This index, , is conserved across subjects, area cortex, and local neural activity levels. shape PSD does not change with increases cortical activity, but amplitude, increases. observe a “knee” spectra at implying existence characteristic time scale . Below we explore two-power-law forms PSD, demonstrate that there are activity-related fluctuations amplitude process lying beneath rhythms. Finally, illustrate through simulation how, small-scale, simplified neuronal models could lead observations. suggests new paradigm non-oscillatory “asynchronous,” scale-free, changes potentials, corresponding mean population-averaged firing rate, complement prevalent “synchronous” rhythm-based paradigm.

Following the discovery of context-dependent synchronization oscillatory neuronal responses in visual system, role neural synchrony cortical networks has been expanded to provide a general mechanism for coordination distributed activity patterns. In current paper, we present an update status this hypothesis through summarizing recent results from our laboratory that suggest important new insights regarding mechanisms, function and relevance phenomenon. first part, derived animal experiments mathematical simulations novel explanations mechanisms zero nero-zero phase lag synchronization. second shall discuss expectancy during perceptual organization its conscious experience. This will be followed by evidence indicates addition supporting cognition, is abnormal major brain disorders, such as schizophrenia autism spectrum disorders. We conclude paper with suggestions further research well critical issues need addressed future studies.
