A comprehensive developmental timeline of activity in the mouse cortex vivo is lacking. Understanding changes that accompany synapse and circuit formation important to understand mechanisms by which molds circuits would help identify critical checkpoints for normal development. To key principles cortical maturation, we systematically tracked spontaneous sensory-evoked with extracellular recordings primary visual (V1) nonanesthetized mice. During first postnatal week (postnatal days P4-P7), V1 was not visually responsive exhibited long (>10 s) periods network silence. Activation consisted exclusively "slow-activity transients," 2-10 s 6-10 Hz "spindle-burst' oscillations; response retinal waves. By tracking daily this activity, two components maturation were revealed: (1) spindle-burst frequency acceleration (eventually becoming 20-50 broadband caused asynchronous state) (2) "filling-in" silent low-frequency (2-4 Hz) (beginning on P10 complete P13). These are sufficient create adult-like pattern continuous alternation between fast-asynchronous slow-synchronous eye opening. Visual responses emerged P8 as evoked spindle-bursts neuronal firing a signal-to-noise ratio higher than adult. Both eliminated opening, leaving only mature, short-latency response. results origins mature implicate period before opening checkpoint. providing systematic description electrical development, establish murine model electroencephalographic development fetal humans.Cortical an indicator long-term health survival preterm infants formation, but gaps remain our understanding origin progression developing cortex.
