Conscious perception seems to be a continuous stream of percepts. Is this true? Recent research sheds new light on age-old debate. In long-lasting postdictive effects, later events can determine the that occurred several hundreds milliseconds earlier.Long-lasting postdiction requires high capacity buffers, which store information unconsciously for substantial periods time. This favors two-stage model, in unconscious processing precedes discrete conscious percepts.Such model solves problems both traditional and models. consciousness percepts or is it discrete, occurring only at certain moments time? question has puzzled philosophers, psychologists, neuroscientists centuries. Our motor commands can be exquisitely timed according to the demands of environment, and ability generate rhythms different tempos is a hallmark musical cognition. Yet, neuronal underpinnings behind rhythmic tapping remain elusive. Here, we found that activity hundreds primate medial premotor cortices (MPCs; pre-supplementary area [preSMA] supplementary [SMA]) neurons show strong periodic pattern becomes evident when their responses are projected into state space using dimensionality reduction analysis. We encoded by circular trajectories travelled at constant speed but with radii, this code highly resilient number participating neurons. Crucially, changes in amplitude oscillatory dynamics signature duration encoding during timing, regardless whether it guided an external metronome or internally controlled not result repetitive commands. This dynamic signal predicted rhythmically produced intervals on trial-by-trial basis. Furthermore, increase variability neural accounted for scalar property, feature temporal processing across tasks species. Finally, interval-dependent increments radius larger engaged production longer intervals. results support notion timing behaviors radial curvature MPC population trajectories.

Abstract Evidence reported in recent decades increasingly confirms that both the cerebellum and basal ganglia, which are primarily involved movement control, also have a significant role vast range of cognitive affective functions. from pathology indicates disorders some aspects language production follow damage or respectively i.e., speech, word fluency, sentence construction, identifiable neuropsychological profiles most manifestations can be specifically attributed to dysfunctions mechanisms supported by one other these structures. The ganglia reciprocally interconnected. Thus, it is plausible observed when involves structures could remote effects abnormal activity other. However, purely clinical-neuropsychological perspective, primary network difficult disentangle. Functional neuroimaging non-invasive brain stimulation techniques likely represent indispensable support for achieving this goal.
