The hippocampus has a well-established role in spatial and episodic memory but broader function been proposed including aspects of perception relational processing. Neural bases sound analysis have described the pathway to auditory cortex, wider networks supporting cognition are still being established. We review what is known about processing information, how itself shaped by sound. In examining imaging, recording, lesion studies species from rodents humans, we uncover hierarchy hippocampal responses during passive exposure, active listening, learning associations between sounds other stimuli. describe hippocampus' connectivity computational architecture allow it track manipulate information – whether form speech, music, or environmental, emotional, phantom sounds. Functional structural correlates experience also identified. extent auditory-hippocampal interactions consistent with view that makes broad contributions cognition, beyond memory. More deeply understanding these may unlock applications entraining rhythms support intervening links hearing loss dementia.

During exploration, animals form an internal map of environment by combining information about landmarks and the animal's movement, a process that depends on hippocampus. The dentate gyrus (DG) is first stage hippocampal circuit where self-motion ("where") sensory cue ("what") are integrated, but it remains unknown how DG neurons encode this during cognitive formation. Using two-photon calcium imaging in mice running treadmill along with online manipulation, we identify robust responses granule cells. Cue cell stable, stimulus-specific, accompanied inhibition nearby neurons. This demonstrates existence "cue cells" addition to better characterized "place DG. We hypothesize supports parallel channels spatial non-spatial contribute distinctly downstream computations affect roles navigation episodic memory.
