It
is
becoming
increasingly
apparent
that
long-term
memory
formation
relies
on
a
distributed
network
of
brain
areas.
While
the
hippocampus
has
been
at
center
attention
for
decades,
it
now
clear
other
regions,
in
particular
medial
prefrontal
cortex
(mPFC),
are
taking
an
active
part
as
well.
Recent
evidence
suggests
mPFC-traditionally
implicated
storage
memories-is
already
critical
early
phases
such
encoding.
In
this
review,
we
summarize
these
findings,
relate
them
to
functional
importance
mPFC
connectivity,
and
discuss
role
during
consolidation
with
respect
different
theories
storage.
Owing
its
high
connectivity
areas
subserving
storage,
emerges

hub

lifetime
memory,
although
much
still
remains
be
discovered.

Abstract
When
exploring
new
environments

spatial
memories

updated

experience
and
retrieved
upon
re-exposure
to
the
same
environment.
The
hippocampus
is
thought

these
memory
processes,
but
how
this
achieved
by
different
subnetworks
such
as

unclear.
To
understand
hippocampal
representations
emerge

during
familiarization,
we
performed
2-photon
calcium
imaging
in
mice
running
virtual
compared
trial-to-trial
dynamics
of
place
cells
over
days.
We
find
fields
rapidly

backwards
from

Tremendous
strides
have
been
made
in
our
understanding
of
the
neurobiological
substrates

Here,
we
integrate
recent
progress

Significance
How
do
we
adaptively
switch
from
perceiving
the
external
world
to
retrieving
goal-relevant
internal
memories?
