While influential works since the 1970s have widely assumed that imitation is an innate skill in both human and non-human primate neonates, recent empirical studies meta-analyses challenged this view, indicating other forms of reward-based learning as relevant factors development social behavior. The visual input translation into matching motor output underlies abilities instead seems to develop along with interactions sensorimotor experience during infancy childhood. Recently, a new stream has been identified brains, updating dual model. This third pathway thought be specialized for dynamics aspects perceptions such eye-gaze, facial expression crucially audio-visual integration speech. Here, we review addressing understudied but crucial aspect speech communication, namely processing orofacial cues (i.e., perception speaker’s lips tongue movements) its vocal auditory cues. Brain perturbation studies allow detailed causal inferences of behavioral and neural processes. Because the combination brain methods measurement techniques is inherently challenging, research in humans has predominantly focused on non-invasive, indirect perturbations, or neurological lesion studies. Non-human primates have been indispensable as a neurobiological system that highly similar to while simultaneously being more experimentally tractable, allowing visualization functional structural impact systematic perturbation. This review considers state art non-human primate with focus approaches can be combined neuroimaging. The hippocampus has a well-established role in spatial and episodic memory but broader function been proposed including aspects of perception relational processing. Neural bases sound analysis have described the pathway to auditory cortex, wider networks supporting cognition are still being established. We review what is known about processing information, how itself shaped by sound. In examining imaging, recording, lesion studies species from rodents humans, we uncover hierarchy hippocampal responses during passive exposure, active listening, learning associations between sounds other stimuli. describe hippocampus' connectivity computational architecture allow it track manipulate information – whether form speech, music, or environmental, emotional, phantom sounds. Abstract Our brain is constantly extracting, predicting, and recognising key spatiotemporal features of the physical world in order to survive. While neural processing visuospatial patterns has been extensively studied, hierarchical mechanisms underlying conscious recognition auditory sequences associated prediction errors remain elusive. Using magnetoencephalography (MEG), we describe functioning 83 participants during previously memorised musical systematic variations. The results show feedforward connections originating from cortices, extending hippocampus, anterior cingulate gyrus, medial gyrus. Simultaneously, observe backward operating opposite direction. Throughout sequences, hippocampus gyrus maintain same level, except for final tone, where assumes top position within hierarchy. evoked responses variations engage network but systematically differ terms temporal dynamics, strength, polarity. Furthermore, induced-response analysis shows that alpha beta power stronger variations, while gamma enhanced sequences. This study expands on predictive coding theory by providing quantitative evidence memory

The primate amygdala is a complex consisting of over dozen nuclei that have been implicated in host cognitive functions, individual differences, and psychiatric illnesses. These functions are implemented through distinct connectivity profiles, which documented animals but remain largely unknown humans. Here we present results from 25 neurosurgical patients who had concurrent electrical stimulation the with intracranial electroencephalography (electrical tract-tracing; es-TT), or fMRI fMRI; es-fMRI), methods providing strong inferences about effective subdivisions rest brain. We quantified functional medial lateral amygdala, temporal order these connections on timescale milliseconds, also detail second-order among key nodes. findings provide uniquely detailed characterization human will inform neuroimaging studies healthy clinical populations.

Postictal apnea is thought to be a major cause of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). However, the mechanisms underlying postictal are unknown. To understand causes apnea, we used multimodal approach study brain breathing control 20 patients (ranging from pediatric adult) undergoing intracranial electroencephalography for intractable epilepsy. Our results indicate that amygdala seizures can apnea. Moreover, identified distinct region within where electrical stimulation was sufficient reproduce prolonged loss persisting well beyond end stimulation. The persistent resistant rising CO2 levels, and air hunger failed occur, suggesting impaired chemosensitivity. Using es-fMRI, potentially novel combining with functional MRI, found altered blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) activity pons/medulla ventral insula. Together, these findings suggest seizure focal subregion suppress periods time period, likely via brainstem insula sites involved chemosensation interoception. They further provide insights into SUDEP, may help identify those at greatest risk, lead treatments prevent SUDEP.

Abstract An increasingly popular animal model for studying the neural basis of social behavior, cognition, and communication is common marmoset ( Callithrix jacchus ). Interest in this New World primate across neuroscience now being driven by their proclivity prosociality repertoire, high volubility, rapid development, as well amenability to naturalistic testing paradigms freely moving recording imaging technologies. The complement these characteristics set marmosets up be a powerful brain years come. Here, we focus on vocal because it area that has both made most progress illustrates prodigious potential species. We review current state field with various areas networks involved perception production, comparing findings from other animals, including humans.
