The transmission of the heartbeat through cerebral vascular system causes intracranial pressure pulsations. We discovered that arterial pulsations can directly modulate central neuronal activity. In a semi-intact rat brain preparation, elicited correlated local field oscillations in olfactory bulb mitral cell layer. These did not require synaptic but reflected baroreceptive transduction cells. This was mediated by fast excitatory mechanosensitive ion channel and modulated spiking awake animals, entrained activity subset neurons within ~20 milliseconds. Thus, we propose this fast, intrinsic interoceptive mechanism perception-for example, during arousal-within possibly across various other areas.

While interoception is of major neuroscientific interest, its precise definition and delineation from exteroception continue to be debated. Here, we propose a functional distinction between based on computational concepts sensor-effector loops. Under this view, the classification sensory inputs as serving or depends loop they feed into, for control either bodily (physiological biochemical) environmental states. We explain utility perspective by examining perception skin temperature, one most challenging cases distinguishing exteroception. Specifically, conceptualising thermoception inference about thermal state body (including skin), which directly coupled thermoregulatory processes. This view emphasises coupling regulation (control) defining property (inference) connects contemporary theories brain-body interactions.

The eight biological hallmarks of health that we initially postulated (Cell. 2021 Jan 7;184(1):33-63) include features spatial compartmentalization (integrity barriers, containment local perturbations), maintenance homeostasis over time (recycling & turnover, integration circuitries, rhythmic oscillations) and an array adequate responses to stress (homeostatic resilience, hormetic regulation, repair regeneration). These affect all somatic strata the human body (molecules, organelles, cells, supracellular units, organs, organ systems, systemic circuitries meta-organism). A code is generally defined as a system of signals or symbols for communication. Experimental evidence synthesized the presence and utility such communication in heart rate variability (HRV) with particular attention to fetal HRV: HRV contains signatures information flow between organs response physiological pathophysiological stimuli states (or syndromes). exhibits features time structure, phase space specificity respect (organ) target syndromes, universality species independence. Together, these form spatiotemporal space, that can be conceived manifold yet-to-be-fully understood dynamic complexity. The objective this article synthesize supporting existence code: hereby, process-specific subsets measures indirectly map traversal reflecting specific contained required body regulate responses those processes. following examples are reviewed, which reflected changes properties across signal-analytical domains conditions: systemic inflammatory response, organ-specific (brain gut), chronic hypoxia intrinsic (heart) (iHRV), allostatic load (physiological stress due surgery), vagotomy (bilateral cervical denervation). Several influential theories have proposed that interoceptive signals, sent from the body to brain, contribute neural processes coordinate complex behaviors. We altered physiological state of using compounds minimal effect on brain and evaluated their decision making in rhesus monkeys. used glycopyrrolate, a nonspecific muscarinic (parasympathetic) antagonist, isoproterenol, beta-1/2 (sympathetic) agonist, create sympathetic-dominated periphery, was indexed by increased heart rate. Rhesus monkeys were trained two variants an approach-avoidance conflict task. The tasks offered choice between enduring mildly aversive stimuli exchange for steady flow rewards, or canceling stimuli, forgoing rewards. latency interrupt as measure monkeys’ tolerance contact with hot but not painful stimulus airflow directed at muzzle. Abstract The cardiovascular and respiratory systems are anatomically functionally integrated within the cardio-respiratory system. This close connection suggests that breathing continuously shapes cardiac interoceptive perception. Previously, we demonstrated interactions in heartbeat-evoked potential, a neural marker of cortical processing signals. Specifically, observed enhanced late potential positivity greater accuracy during exhalation compared to inhalation participants engaged tasks. Here, extended these findings time-frequency domain by reanalysing our previous dataset. We investigated heartbeat-modulated oscillations, examining power, inter-trial coherence, functional connectivity across cycle at rest, task (heartbeat counting), an exteroceptive control (cardiac-tone counting). Results revealed heartbeat counting task, heartbeat-related increased inhalation, particularly alpha theta frequency bands. These effects were primarily localized right fronto-centro-parietal electrodes. Furthermore, identified interactive relationships between oscillations band predicted accuracy. independent physiology absent task. proposed model framework predictive coding, suggesting occur multiple levels hierarchy: peripheral, brainstem, cortical. Our interpretation highlights role alpha-band modulations enhancing precision-weighting prediction errors, thereby facilitating attentional allocation signals suppression task-irrelevant distractors, exhalation.

Real-time fMRI (rt-fMRI) neurofeedback (NF) training is a novel non-invasive technique for volitional brain modulation. Given the important role of anterior insula (AI) in human cognitive and affective processes, it has become one most investigated regions rt-fMRI studies. Most studies employed emotional recall/imagery as regulation strategy, which may be less effective psychiatric disorders characterized by altered processing. The present study thus aimed to examine feasibility interoceptive strategy based on heartbeat detection guided AI its associated behavioral changes using randomized double-blind, sham feedback-controlled between-subject design. 66 participants were recruited randomly assigned receive either NF from left (LAI) or feedback control region while strategy. N = 57 included final data analyses. Empathic pre-post collected measures effects. Results showed that group exhibited stronger LAI activity than with being positively correlated accuracy following training, although there no significant increases over sessions. Importantly, ability could maintained transfer session without feedback. Internal bodily signals, such as heartbeats, can influence conscious perception of external sensory information. Spontaneous shifts attention between interoception and exteroception have been proposed the underlying mechanism, but direct evidence is lacking. Here, we used steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) frequency tagging to independently measure neural processing stimuli that were concurrently presented varied in heartbeat coupling healthy participants. Although was irrelevant participants' task detecting brief color changes, found decreased SSVEPs for systole-coupled increased diastole-coupled stimuli, compared non-coupled stimuli. These results suggest attentional representational resources allocated vary according fluctuations cardiac-related signals across cardiac cycle, reflecting spontaneous immediate competition events. Furthermore, frequent with stronger not only led a larger (HEP) also resulted smaller change N2 component, increase HEP amplitude associated decrease amplitude. findings indicate an overall or longer-term brain internal domain at expense reduced available domain. Our study highlights dynamic reallocation limited internal-external axis supports trade-off exteroception.
