Abstract The transmission of heartbeat through the cerebral vascular system is known to cause intracranial pressure pulsations. Here we describe that arterial pulsations within brain can directly modulate central neuronal activity. In a semi-intact rat preparation, elicit correlated local field oscillations in olfactory bulb (OB) are sensitive hypoxia and block mechanosensitive channels. We find mitral cell spiking activity part synchronized these oscillations. Indeed, awake animals firing subset OB neurons entrained ∼ 20 ms. Several lines evidence indicate expression ion channel membranes, most likely Piezo2, implementing pulsation transduction pathway thus baroreception OB. propose this intrinsic interoceptive mechanism modulates e.g. during arousal also could influence on wider scale.

Abstract Introduction Paediatric occupational therapists assess and provide intervention for children presenting with sensory processing challenges that impact their daily performance. Interoception, the ability to sense internal body signals, is an emerging practice area, yet it remains unclear how why paediatric clinicians are applying interoception related concepts in practice.
