Abstract The classic view of cortical circuits composed precisely tuned neurons hardly accounts for large-scale recordings indicating that neuronal populations are heterogeneous and exhibit activity patterns evolving on low-dimensional manifolds. Using a modelling approach, we connect these two contrasting views. Our recurrent spiking network models explicitly link the circuit structure with dynamics population activity. Importantly, show different can lead to equivalent dynamics. Nevertheless, design method retrieving from test it simulated data. approach not only unifies established collective dynamics, but also paves way identifying elements experimental recordings.

This paper proposes an investigation of affective experience bridging the field phenomenology and cognitive neuroscience. Drawing on Husserl’s mainstream neuroscience approach, I will differentiate phenomena into two categories: emotions feelings. According to neuroscience, Panksepp’s proposal is followed further distinguish three forms emotional processes. propose that holds greater heuristic value in primary secondary processes experience, which can be defined as emotions, while acquires significance third level, interpret being related Epistemological details are introduced distinct approaches measurement brief insight empirical methodologies crucial justify introduction phenomenological analyses. After a method, this series analyses demonstrate how complex phenomena, such desires feelings, investigated. Such approach refer intentionality, constitutive functions, experiential layers. does not necessarily contradict but it allows us introduce new insights classifications feelings that, long run, may influence research.

Abstract Sensorimotor computations for learning and behavior rely on precise patterns of synaptic connectivity. Yet, we typically lack the wiring diagrams long-range connections between sensory motor circuits in brain. Here provide diagram sensorimotor involved production male zebra finch song, a natural ethologically relevant behavior. We examined functional connectivity from 4 main afferent pathways onto 3 known classes projection neurons song premotor cortical region HVC. Recordings hundreds identified reveal rules monosynaptic existence polysynaptic ensembles excitatory inhibitory neuronal populations Circuit tracing further identifies novel HVC’s presynaptic partners. Our results indicate modular organization ensemble-like networks integrating input with local circuits, providing important context information flow learned vocal

Abstract Brain recordings collected at different resolutions support statistically distinct signatures of information processing, leading to scale-dependent theories brain function. Here, we demonstrate that these disparate neural-coding emerge from the same multiscale functional organisation neuronal activity across calcium-imaging whole brains zebrafish and nematode, as well sensory regions fly, mouse, macaque brain. Network simulations show hierarchical-modular structural connectivity facilitates coordination, enhancing processing benefits such a maximal dynamic range. Finally, this cross-scale supports behavioural states species by reconfiguring affiliation temporal dynamics mesoscale. Our findings suggest self-similar scaling is universal principle reconciles function, facilitating both efficiency resiliency while enabling significant reconfiguration mesoscale cellular ensembles accommodate demands.
