Iron (Fe) is abundant in soils but with a poor availability for plants, especially calcareous soils. To favor its acquisition, plants develop morphological and physiological responses, mainly their roots, known as Fe deficiency responses. In dicot the regulation of these responses not totally known, some hormones signaling molecules, such auxin, ethylene, glutathione (GSH), nitric oxide (NO) S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO), have been involved activation. Most substances, including GSH NO, increase production Fe-deficient roots while GSNO, derived from decreases content. This paradoxical result could be explained increased expression activity GSNO reductase (GSNOR) enzyme, which decomposes to oxidized (GSSG) NH3. The fact that NO content increases suggests do play same role review an update results supporting GSNOR possible roles are discussed by taking into account mode action through post-translational modifications, S-nitrosylation, interactions auxin directly related activation plants.
