Heat pumps (HPs) are considered as a key technology in the future energy system. Besides technical and ecological aspects, user acceptance friendliness also essential. The aim of study was therefore to research which aspects decisive for purchase decision, different types HP owners can be distinguished, how their specific behavior characterized terms control operation, what respective requirements wishes functions operation HPs. A mixed-methods approach an exploratory sequential design used. Based on nine qualitative interviews survey with 510 respondents, both conducted Austria, it is observed that most relevant arguments decision HPs high environmental efficiency, well resource independence. Respecting certain usage requirement patterns, four could identified defined—the minimalist, functionalist, tech-savvy tinkerer, anxious user. In future, intelligent regulation approaches integration into holistic building management system (smart home) will become more important. results, tailor-made solutions developed, optimized, new services developed.

Currently, 81% of Scottish households rely on mains gas for heating, contributing significantly to the country’s carbon emissions. Although heat pumps are a central component Government’s transition strategy, adoption rate has fallen short expectations. This small-scale research study delves into pressing issue transitioning Scotland’s homes low-zero heating systems, critical step in achieving nation’s net-zero target by 2045. study’s primary objective was investigate homeowners’ attitudes and motivations surrounding pump adoption. It scrutinises decision-making processes, factors influencing their choices, experiences those who have already embraced domestic as source. Furthermore, this aims harness user feedback bridge information gaps, address perceived barriers, promote wider acceptance technologies. Data were collected through structured online questionnaire completed targeted sample 61 homeowners had made switch pumps. The findings indicate that more awareness campaigns can best help facilitate widespread dissemination Scotland, these should sit alongside support current adopters. In doing so, it will be possible ensure benefits realised such communicated future users.
