Abstract
Passive
Acoustic
Monitoring
(PAM)
has
become
a
widely
used
method
to
study
cetaceans,
especially
for
populations
facing
escalating
threats
from
noisy
human
activities,
including
shipping
traffic,
fishing
industry
and
marine
constructions.
Here,
we
conducted
the
first
using
an
Autonomous
Surface
Vehicle
(ASV)
explore
distribution
acoustic
behavior
of
cetaceans
characterize
anthropogenic
sound
sources
in
central
Mediterranean
Sea.
A
Wave
Glider
equipped
with
single-towed
recorder
was
deployed
13th
September
2022
3rd
March
2023.
The
recording
yielded
19,115
files
460s
each
(about
2
TB),
third
which
kept
preliminary
analysis
based
on
spectrogram
visualization
audio
listening.
results
showed
that
nearly
half
dataset
contained
delphinid
signals
(Delphinidae),
followed
by
sperm
whales
(
Physeter
macrocephalus)
fin
(
Balaenoptera
physalus),
notable
hotspots
southern
Tyrrhenian
Ionian
Moreover,
almost
continuous
detection
highlighted
widespread
impact
activities
area.
These
findings
demonstrate
value
passive
acoustics
use
autonomous
vehicles
as
versatile
tool
large-scale
long-term
monitoring,
offering
promising
approach
support
conservation
efforts
vulnerable
species
while
advancing
strategies
mitigate
impacts
ecosystems.
