Abstract Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) has become a widely used method to study cetaceans, especially for populations facing escalating threats from noisy human activities, including shipping traffic, fishing industry and marine constructions. Here, we conducted the first using an Autonomous Surface Vehicle (ASV) explore distribution acoustic behavior of cetaceans characterize anthropogenic sound sources in central Mediterranean Sea. A Wave Glider equipped with single-towed recorder was deployed 13th September 2022 3rd March 2023. The recording yielded 19,115 files 460s each (about 2 TB), third which kept preliminary analysis based on spectrogram visualization audio listening. results showed that nearly half dataset contained delphinid signals (Delphinidae), followed by sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) fin (Balaenoptera physalus), notable hotspots southern Tyrrhenian Ionian Moreover, almost continuous detection highlighted widespread impact activities area. These findings demonstrate value passive acoustics use autonomous vehicles as versatile tool large-scale long-term monitoring, offering promising approach support conservation efforts vulnerable species while advancing strategies mitigate impacts ecosystems.
