Abstract The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030) seeks to deliver “transformative ocean science solutions sustainable development, connecting people and the ocean.” Yet, traditional scientific methods data collection alone are insufficient catalyze societal change needed sustainability equity. This article focuses on vital role significance literacy as central operationalizing one foundational challenge areas within framework—Restoring society's relationship with (Challenge 10). In response these over last few decades, seafood guides were developed influence purchasing behaviour in turn increase sustainability of sector. However, date there has been limited evaluation use impact guides, little assessment public perceptions attitudes sustainability. Using a questionnaire (n = 2409) Marine Conservation Society’s (MCS’s) Good Fish Guide (GFG) as case study, this study explored UK toward examined role GFG encouraging sustainable habits. Motivational drivers barriers using MCS also investigated. A positive attitude towards guide knowledge, including understanding importance sustainability, found be important motivators use. The main barrier was lack awareness for 69% participants. This revealed that perception healthy, more environmentally friendly animal protein than land-based alternatives is an driver its consumption. users purchase significantly (60%) compared non-users with slight majority (53%) reporting influences their behaviour. These findings have practical implications consumption line government dietary guidelines whilst simultaneously meeting global goals. makes unique contribution how can both globally thus potential impacting supply chains generally.

Introduction The overarching goal of the UN Ocean Decade is to “change humanity's relationship with ocean.” While this may be a challenge, it is, at same time, once in generation opportunity. How can 8 billion people, including those who don't live near coastal areas, inspired value and care for ocean? This essence ocean literacy, driver literacy research (OLR). Methods In 2021, we began initiative co-create global OLR agenda by developing community, better understand existing themes, gaps, future priorities, actions, impacts initiatives. To deliver this, series virtual workshops – first taking place as part Laboratories was complemented participatory methodology using digital survey mapping tools crowdsourced collaboration. Results discussion Through process, four initial priorities were identified, measuring role policy mechanism, alignment climate change blue economy agendas. Finally, working definition developed further guide beyond.
