Achieving the intertwined goals of justice and sustainability requires transformative changes to meaningfully engage diverse perspectives. Therefore, scholars policymakers need new ways recognising addressing nature's multiple values across cultures, disciplines other knowledge traditions. By reviewing academic publications, policy documents Indigenous local community sources, we developed an inclusive typology clarify value concepts guide their consideration in decisions. Through case studies, illustrate how navigating 'horizontal' 'vertical' interactions within this can help confront plural-value challenges, such as enhancing participation environmental research practice, effective management socio-environmental conflicts. We conclude by exploring further leverage change decision-making contexts.

As conservation initiatives expand in response to biodiversity loss, there remains limited understanding about what forms of governance and roles for different actors produce the best ecological outcomes. Indigenous peoples' local communities' (IPs' LCs') extend beyond participation more equitable based on relative control recognition their values institutions, but relationship with outcomes unclear. We review 648 empirical studies develop a typology IP LC and, subsample 170, analyze relationships reported The findings reveal that governance, equal partnership or primary IPs LCs, are associated significantly positive This carries important implications, including actions toward Global Biodiversity Framework targets, suggesting need elevate role LCs leaders while respecting rights customary institutions.

Nature-based solutions (NBS) are championed for providing co-benefits to cities and residents, yet their environmental justice impacts increasingly debated. In this paper, we explore whether how hybrid governance approaches, such as Mosaic Governance, may contribute just transformations sustainable through fostering long-term collaborations between local governments, communities, grassroots initiatives. Based on case studies in three major European cities, propose then exemplify six possible pathways increase justice: greening the neighborhood, diversifying values practices, empowering people, bridging across linking institutions, scaling of inclusive discourses practices. Despite diversity outcomes cases, our results consistently show that Governance particularly contributes recognition NBS practices alignment with community aspirations. Understanding residents' perceptions of ecosystem services (ESs) is important for modern management. However, these are often overlooked in managing nature reserves, leading to decreased participation policy implementation. This study proposes investigate the and ecological concepts contained ESs among residents using a questionnaire survey. The results showed that: (1) Residents prioritize supporting they value "leisure recreation" most, followed by "air purification" "habitat animals plants". (2) Perceptions different have significant spatial differences, distance significantly affects perceptions. (3) Most types correlated with each other, indigenous concept has profound impact on their (4) Education livelihood play positive effect ESs, while nationality, gender, age, distance, relief show negative influence. Improving education levels, establishing community rules regulations, strengthening humans connections, environmental management, integrating into regional development planning some suggested solutions. research provides valuable insights incorporating knowledge management at local levels.

Abstract Technical summary The question of how science can become a lever in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals permeates most recent sustainability research. Wide-ranging literature calling for transformative approach has emerged years. Land use is a key driver of the ongoing biodiversity crisis and therefore also major opportunity for its mitigation. However, appropriately considering diversity land-use actors activities in conservation assessments planning challenging. As result, top-down policy are often criticized lack contextual nuance widely acknowledged to be required effective just action. To address these challenges, we have developed conceptually consistent, scalable land system typology demonstrated usefulness world's tropical dry woodlands. Our identifies that represent typical threats opportunities We identified systems hierarchical way, with global level allowing broad-scale comparative work. Nested within it, regionalized provides social-ecological specificity context. showcase this regionalization five hotspots change loss woodlands Argentina, Bolivia, Mozambique, India, Cambodia. Unlike other approaches present use, our accounts complexity overlapping uses. This allows, example, assessment how measures conflict uses, understanding co-benefits trade-offs area-based conservation, mapping threats, or targeting actor-based measures. Moreover, framework enables cross-regional learning by revealing both commonalities differences, as demonstrate here By bridging gap between global, top-down, regional, bottom-up initiatives, more contextually appropriate sustainability across scales targeted social-ecologically nuanced interventions.

Abstract The concept of ‘peopled landscapes’ is based on the notion that it not possible, nor socially or politically desirable, to remove people from environment in era Anthropocene. As such, necessary document and develop ways coexist flourish. This review examines emergent scholarship about peopled landscapes biodiversity conservation by considering invasive plant management rewilding as social processes. While are often understood separate, thinking through scientific research examples Australia UK, we demonstrate how both forms human action can be more usefully relations with nature involving change action. Drawing attention agency, practices capacity, show diverse nonhuman actions recognised, attributed acknowledged landscapes. In practice, centring idea (rather than conceiving where impact minimised) shows related responses environmental problems. Abstract Managing nature-based solutions (NBS) in urban areas for carbon mitigation and biodiversity outcomes is a global policy challenge, yet little known about how to both assess weave diverse knowledge systems values into carbon-biodiversity trade-off assessments. This paper examines the spatial relationships between biophysical social sequestration potential (measured as dioxide, CO 2 , flux) Helsinki, Finland, using integrated valuation. The approach combines methods from modelling, expert scoring approaches assessment public participation geographic information (PPGIS). Results indicate strong associations of flux priorities, weaker values. Integration leads multiple pathways protection NBS achieve outcomes, well options targeting education capacity building programs local concern.
