Spatial analysis of critical minerals and socio-economic data can identify communities being put under pressure by mining activities. Our study highlights that some Australia's most disadvantaged areas host the highest number mines mineral deposits. These findings are significant because Critical Minerals Strategy promises to accrue benefits locally building partnerships with First Nations peoples. We demonstrate how novel compilations illuminate pre-existing issues inequalities for policy makers industry understand address. Without major reforms in practice, inequitable distribution mining's impacts will persist. methodology has application other nations reliable geological survey data, project development information, national population statistics.

The rapid growth of clean energy technologies is driving a rising demand for critical minerals. In 2022 at the 15th Conference Parties to Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15), seven major economies formed an alliance enhance sustainability mining these essential decarbonization However, there scarcity studies assessing threat global biodiversity. By integrating dataset with great ape density distribution, we estimated number African apes that spatially coincided industrial projects. We show up one-third Africa's population faces mining-related risks. West Africa in particular, numerous areas overlap fragmented habitats, often high-density regions. For 97% areas, no survey data are available, underscoring importance increased accessibility environmental within sector facilitate research into complex interactions between mining, climate, biodiversity, and sustainability.

Continued dependence on imported fossil fuels is rapidly becoming unsustainable in the face of twin challenges global climate change and energy security demands Europe. Here we present scenarios line with REPowerEU package to identify Renewables Acceleration Areas that support rapid renewable expansion, while ensuring minimal harm places important for biodiversity rural communities. We calculated area needed meet objectives under Business-as-Usual (BAU) Low-conflict (LCON) development within each country, providing a broad overview potential generation reduce impacts when steered toward lower conflict lands. Our analysis shows meeting would require network land-based wind turbines solar arrays encompassing upwards 164,789 km 2 by 2030 445,654 2050, latter roughly equivalent land Sweden. results highlight BAU patterns disproportionately target high-conflict cover types. By 2030, depending pathway, are projected impact approximately 4,386–20,996 65,735–138,454 natural agricultural lands, respectively. As increase from 2050 lands also increase, 33,911 future 399,879 development. Despite this large footprint, low-conflict can generate substantial energy: 6.6 million GWh 3.5 wind, 8–31 times 3–5 objectives. Given these patterns, emphasize need careful planning areas greater potential, either due larger demand or limited availability. Top-emitting countries (Germany, Italy, Poland, France, Spain) those flexibility (Albania, Slovenia, Montenegro, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia Herzegovina, Finland, Greece, Portugal, Norway) should be priorities country-level customizations guide siting avoid disproportionate high-value areas.

Indigenous Peoples lands cover over a fifth of the world's land surface and support high levels biodiversity. However, for centuries have suffered from deprivation, often dispossession, even cultural genocide, process continuing today in some regions. Biodiversity hotspots, global areas endemicity that are heavily threatened by habitat loss other human activities also affected conflict. Although covering only 2.4 % surface, 80 armed conflicts occurred biodiversity hotspots between 1950 2000. Given many overlap with Peoples' lands, we asked whether co-occurrence ecological integrity, measured using Intact Forest Landscapes as units which still contain significant biological diversity, Human Footprint proxy anthropogenic impacts, increased persistence where there has been Our results show that, within conflict was more likely to occur on than non-Indigenous yet environmental damage impacts were both lower. We suggest able moderate ecosystem degradation processes before, during, after because their strong ties determination defend rights territories. argue recognition efforts protect is not socially just but essential meeting now pressing post-2020 conservation targets.

The world's largest solar farm is planned for a remote part of northern Australia. Construction the 12,000 ha arrays will create local jobs but may have substantial environmental and social impacts. Despite its unprecedented size, little known about societal views farm, potentially undermining public acceptance. Using split sampling procedure, we surveyed emotions other among residents same jurisdiction, some whom benefit economically (n = 124), broader across rest Australia 2099). Most people (70%) felt positive with 24% feeling proud 46% respondents expressing hope. Those living relatively close to proposed held strongest views. strong support high levels trust in developer contrasts strongly often vehement opposition wind farms. Proactively identifying where land conversion might occur is critical to targeted and effective conservation planning. Previous efforts map future habitat loss have largely focused on forested systems been limited in their consideration of drivers loss. We developed a 1-km resolution, global pressure from multiple drivers, referred as the index (CPI). The CPI combines past rates anthropogenic change, measured by temporal human modification maps, with suitability maps for potential expansion large-scale development. thus offers new way measure cumulative gradient opposed categorical cover change. find that nearly 23% across 200 countries relatively high pressure, potentially impacting over 460 million ha intact natural lands. illustrate how this information can be used identify areas proactive avoid ensure national commitments under Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Paris Agreement Climate Frameworks are upheld.

The advancements in data science, along with the digital and satellite technologies, have increased capabilities for using artificial intelligence (AI) fields of forestry wildlife. However, rapid expansion construction projects, agricultural activities, urban regions presents a substantial risk to biodiversity worldwide. Therefore, cutting-edge technology like domains forests might enhance effective monitoring, management, conservation forest resources. This chapter aims provide thorough overview global use AI machine learning (ML) algorithms sector protection. Moreover, this study investigates challenges faced during biodiversity. results would motivate officials, scientists, researchers, conservationists explore possibilities management
