Abstract Globally, populations are increasingly located in areas at high risk of climate change impacts. Some lack the agency to move out harm’s way, leading involuntary immobility. The risks these face insufficiently addressed policy and disaster planning. While planning should be data-informed, appropriate data not limit governments institutions from taking action reduce Incorporating immobility within broader sustainable development goals safe, orderly, regular migration may substantially

Abstract Globally, populations are increasingly located in areas at high risk of frequent, extreme weather events. Some exposed have the ability to move safer places; others unable get out harm’s way. The climate risks facing these involuntary immobile not often addressed by local and national authorities, despite increasing recognition international development agencies humanitarian actors. Here we discuss when how events lead immobility considering influence political, socioeconomic, environmental factors. Addressing barriers policy disaster planning, early warning systems anticipatory action could be tailored support involuntarily communities. While planning should data-informed, lack appropriate data quality limit governments institutions from taking action. Immobility needs aligned with broader sustainable objectives which entail justice orderly migration.

West Africa’s vulnerability to climate change is influenced by a complex interplay of socio-economic and environmental factors, exacerbated the region’s reliance on rain-fed agriculture. Climate variability, combined with rapid population growth, intensifies existing challenges. Migration has become key adaptive response these challenges, enabling communities diversify livelihoods enhance resilience. However, spatial patterns migration in risks are not fully understood. Thus, study evaluates applicability IPCC risk assessment framework map predict Ghana Nigeria, focus identifying areas potential out-migration. By integrating geospatial environmental, socio-economic, data, highlights that have higher likelihood for current baseline near future (2050). Future modeled using CMIP6 projections under RCP4.5 scenario, while providing insight into exposure. The results from compared actual migrant motivations, ground-level perspective drivers. In northern elevated hazard, vulnerability, exposure scores suggest due overall faced population. Climate change will affect many global landscapes in the future, requiring millions of people to move away from areas at risk flooding, erosion, drought and extreme temperatures. The term managed retreat is increasingly used Global North refer movement infrastructure climate risks. Managed retreat, however, has proven be one most difficult adaptation options undertake because complex economic, social-cultural psychological factors that shape individual community responses relocation process. Among these factors, place attachment expected possibilities for disrupts bonds identities individuals communities have invested place. Beyond informing scholars practitioners, synthesis identifies several need attention.
