Abstract Exotic natural enemies that are imported to control a target pest may attack non-target species or disrupt the performance of other already present. We evaluate possible interactions between three parasitoid species, native Telenomus nizwaensis and Trichogramma brassicae evanescens , when presented with Deudorix livia host eggs under high-density laboratory conditions. is butterfly which an economically damaging in Omani pomegranate agro-ecosystem. Most (73.5% overall) observed parasitism was by T. nizwaensis. It performed best absence either species. These thus have some potential suppression indigenous enemy lower-density conditions field, neither them achieved high rates themselves (laboratory conditions: = 12.5%; 18.5%; no evidence for any field-collected eggs). Future efforts this agro-ecosystem would be directed towards encouraging nizwaensis, rather than importation . Screening negative effects on provided recommended.

The release of biological control agents has been an important means controlling invasive species for over 150 years. While these releases have led to the sustainable 250 pest and weed worldwide, a minority caused environmental harm. A growing recognition risks focus on risk assessment beginning in 1990s along with precipitous decline releases. this new greatly improved safety control, it came at cost lost opportunities solve problems associated species. framework that incorporates benefits is thus needed understand net effects We introduce such framework, using native biodiversity as common currency both risks. model based interactions among four categories organisms: (1) agent, (2) (pest or weed) targeted by (3) one more stand benefit from target species, (4) are being harmed released agent. Biological control has been effectively exploited by mankind since 300 CE. By promoting the natural regulation of pests, weeds, and diseases, it produces societal benefits at food-environment-health nexus. Here we scrutinize biological endeavours their social-ecological outcomes through a holistic 'One-Health' lens, recognizing that health humans, animals, plants, wider environment are linked interdependent. Evidence shows generates desirable within all One Health dimensions, mitigating global change issues such as chemical pollution, biocide resistance, biodiversity loss, habitat destruction. Yet, its cross-disciplinary achievements remain underappreciated. To remedy this, advocate systems-level, integrated approach to research, policy, practice. Framing in context helps unite medical veterinary personnel, ecologists, conservationists agricultural professionals joint quest for solutions some most pressing planetary health.
