Abstract The existing contradictory findings on the contribution of trading volume to volatility forecasting prompt us seek new solutions test sequential information arrival hypothesis (SIAH). Departing from other empirical analyses that mainly focus sophisticated testing methods, this research offers insights into volume‐volatility nexus by decomposing and reconstructing activity short‐run components typically represent irregular flow long‐run denote extreme in stock market. We are first attempt at incorporating an improved mode decomposition (EMD) method investigate ability along with Heterogeneous Autoregressive (HAR) model. Previous is used obtain decompositions forecast future ensure ex ante forecast, both processes carried out rolling window scheme. Rather than itself, results show reconstructed also able significantly improve out‐of‐sample realized (RV) forecasts. This finding robust one‐step ahead multiple‐step horizons under different estimation windows. thus fill gap studies (1) extending literature linkage EMD‐HAR analysis (2) providing a clear view how helps RV accuracy.
